School Bus Driver/Utility Worker

The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School District is seeking a dependable, responsible, and safety-conscious individual to join our team as a School Bus Driver/Utility Worker. This position is responsible for safely transporting students, maintaining a clean and safe vehicle, and assisting with general utility and maintenance duties as needed. The ideal candidate will demonstrate reliability, professionalism, good communication skills, and a commitment to providing excellent service to students, staff, and the community.

Civil Service Description:

Classification: Pending

The work involves responsibility for performing a wide variety of building maintenance and repair tasks for operating a bus on an assigned route. The work requires thorough execution of tasks following a well established procedure. While operating a vehicle the operator is responsible for the safety of the passengers, adherence to schedules and cleanliness of the vehicle inside and out. The work is performed under general supervision with considerable leeway allowing the operator in carrying out the details of the work. The incumbent does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities (Illustrative only)

Repairs office and/or school furniture; Repairs plumbing fixtures; Replaces window glass and cords; Repairs and installs fences; Builds forms for concrete work; Mixes mortar; Installs playground equipment; Assists in cleaning and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment; Cuts and threads pipe; Sets up scaffolding; Washes walls, ceilings, and windows; Paints walls and ceilings; Acts as a substitute custodian; Loads and unloads trucks and occasionally drives motor vehicles; Mows and rakes lawns and trims shrubs and trees; Removes snow from sidewalks; Operates a bus on a regular schedule or on special occasions; Checks the operating condition of the bus before starting on a trip; Reports any mechanical defects to immediate supervisor; Keeps trip log including times, mileage, gas and oil consumptions and routes; Confers with group leaders, institutional officials with regards to schedules and routes; Cleans interior and exterior of vehicle; May be required to operate a station wagon or other similar vehicle; May be required to perform minor maintenance tasks, oil changes, etc., on vehicle under the supervision of a mechanic.

Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics

Working knowledge of building maintenance practices; Working knowledge of general mechanics, tools and equipment usage, terminology and safety precautions; Ability to follow oral and written instructions; Mechanical aptitude; Good knowledge of driving safety practices and road conditions; Ability to make minor repairs to vehicle; Ability to get along well with others and command their respect; Mental alertness; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of Certified Driver’s License with a (S) School Bus endorsement at time of appointment. Drivers must be at least 21 years of age and must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education. AND Graduation from high school or possession of high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience in building maintenance or trades work.
