Job description

(Carter G. Woodson School)

Carter G. Woodson School is a non‑profit charter school in Winston‑Salem, N.C. We serve 500 students from grades K – 12 each year and support over 80 + staff. We are seeking bus drivers to join our team to transport students to and from school and extracurricular events following a scheduled route while ensuring student safety. The desired candidate for this position exercises responsible leadership and communicates in a professional and positive manner at all times with parents, staff, students, school officials, and any other individual they may come in contact with.

Responsibilities
  • Safely drives a school bus on days when school is in session over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, loading and unloading students at designated locations.
  • Transports students, teachers, and others on school field and activity trips.
  • Maintains order and discipline in an effective and courteous manner among students being transported in accordance with school policies and procedures; reports and documents incidents involving student discipline.
  • In case of accidents or emergencies, evacuates students according to written and practiced procedures, ensuring that medical emergency procedures are followed; completes a written report as required.
  • Inventories bus emergency and first‑aid supplies and equipment; reports needed equipment to the Transportation Supervisor.
  • Perform a pre‑trip inspection. Check the condition of the vehicle’s tires, brakes, windshield, wipers, lights, fuel, and safety equipment to ensure that everything is in proper working order.
  • Perform a post‑trip inspection. Check for items left on the bus, as well as vandalism to the bus and bus equipment. Ensure all students have exited the bus.
  • At the end of the daily route, ensure that the vehicle is parked properly and all windows and doors are secured. Complete a visual inspection of the bus and report any bus defects or needed repairs immediately.
  • Report all traffic violations or accidents promptly.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • High school education or equivalent
  • Current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with “S” School Bus and “P” Passenger Endorsements. Previous experience working as a bus driver preferred, but not required.
  • Clean driving record with no recent driving violations. Record must be in good status; not suspended, disqualified or revoked.
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Must be reliable and proficient in meeting time schedules.
Compensation

Compensation for this position is $18.00 hr.
