School Bus Driver

Starting pay is $20.62 per hour with a guarantee of 4 hours per day for drivers assigned 2 routes.

Description: Shawnee Heights School District USD 450 is accepting online applications for school bus drivers. CDL with passenger endorsement is helpful but not mandatory. Training will be provided, including assistance in obtaining a CDL driver's license. Must be able to interact effectively with children. Physical and drug screening are required.

Pay: Starting at $20.62 per hour, with a guaranteed 4 hours daily for drivers with 2 routes. There are morning and afternoon routes, plus opportunities for extra pay at the same hourly rate for driving classes and sports team activities. The district covers one health insurance plan for drivers working two routes daily.

Reports to: Director of Support Services/Fleet Coordinator/Assistant Transportation Director

Purpose and Objectives: To provide safe, reliable transportation that supports district programs and activities, working closely with staff and administration.

Essential Job Functions:

• Provide safe and reliable transportation for students.
• Ensure compliance with state transportation guidelines.
• Communicate effectively with staff and community.
• React positively to change and interruptions, meeting deadlines.
• Operate all necessary vehicles and equipment.
• Follow district vision and mission.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

• Prolonged sitting, turning, reaching.
• Ability to operate vehicles, including at night.
• Work indoors and outdoors.
• Lift approximately 50 pounds.
• Work in noisy, crowded, and stressful environments, with exposure to dust, fumes, and odors.

General Responsibilities:

• Implement transportation regulations, including First Aid, CPR, and Defensive Driving Certification.
• Maintain discipline and report misconduct.
• Keep the bus clean and check for mechanical issues.
• Follow route schedules and notify authorities of issues.
• Discharge students only at authorized stops.
• Exercise leadership during out-of-district trips.
• Report accidents and complete required reports.
• Enforce no smoking, drinking, or eating regulations on the bus.
• Attend in-service meetings and perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Good health, verified by physical exam, including TB and drug tests.
• Valid Kansas CDL with required endorsements.
• Meet all state bus driver requirements, including certifications.
• At least one year of driving experience in varied conditions.
• Complete behind-the-wheel training successfully.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills.
• Adherence to district policies and safety protocols.
• Confidentiality of student and personnel information.
