Job Title: Unit Director - School-based

Department: Operations

Reports To: Chief Operations Officer

Status: Part-Time Non-exempt hourly (20+ hours per week; less than 29)

The regular schedule for this position consists of four-hour shifts, Monday through Friday, from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., during the school year.

Hours and times vary during summer camp.

Job Summary

The Unit Director is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and daily operations of an assigned school-based Club. The Unit Director provides strategic leadership for staff, programming, membership growth, facility operations, safety, family engagement, fiscal stewardship, and community partnerships. This position is accountable for creating a positive Club culture that promotes high-quality youth development programming and measurable outcomes while maintaining operational excellence.

The Unit Director serves as the primary liaison between BGCSENC and the host school, fostering collaborative relationships that strengthen the Club's impact within the school community.

Major Responsibilities
1. Leadership
  • Provide leadership and oversight for all daily Club operations.
  • Ensure compliance with all BGCSENC policies, BGCA standards, school district requirements, grant requirements, and state regulations.
  • Create staff schedules that ensure appropriate supervision ratios and operational coverage.
  • Ensure the facility is clean, organized, secure, and prepared for daily operations.
  • Lead emergency preparedness procedures, drills, and incident response.
  • Maintain accurate operational records and required documentation.
2. Club Programming
  • Develop and oversee high-quality programming aligned with BGCA’s Formula for Impact.
  • Monitor program quality through regular observations and coaching.
  • Review and approve weekly lesson plans and activity schedules.
  • Ensure programming is engaging, age-appropriate, and outcome-driven.
  • Utilize youth voice and member feedback to strengthen programming.
  • Coordinate special events, family engagement opportunities, and recognition programs.
3. Membership & Family Engagement
  • Lead membership recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Ensure all membership records remain accurate and up to date in MyClubHub.
  • Welcome and orient new families to Club expectations.
  • Maintain regular communication regarding Club activities, policies, and events.
4. Financial & Resource Management
  • Monitor expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility.
  • Approve purchases in accordance with organizational procedures.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of equipment and supplies.
5. Staff Leadership & Development
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide regular coaching and performance feedback.
  • Address employee performance concerns promptly and consistently.
6. School & Community Partnerships
  • Serve as BGCSENC’s primary representative within the assigned school.
  • Build collaborative relationships with school administrators, teachers, counselors, and support staff.
  • Promote BGCSENC throughout the community while maintaining positive public relations.
7. Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure full implementation of all BGCA Child Safety Requirements.
  • Ensure staff adheres to supervision standards and safety policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of member and employee information.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Complete required organizational reports accurately and on time.
  • Attend required meetings, trainings, conferences, and professional development.
  • Assist with organizational events and fundraising initiatives.
  • Support cross-functional organizational projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Relationships

Internal: Maintains close communication with Regional Directors, Assistant Regional Directors, fellow Unit Directors, administrative staff, program staff, transportation staff, volunteers, and organizational leadership to ensure successful operations.

External: Maintains positive working relationships with school administrators, teachers, parents, community organizations, vendors, volunteers, partner agencies, local businesses, grant partners, and representatives of Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Skills/Knowledge Required
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Human Services, Youth Development, Recreation, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • An associate degree with equivalent leadership experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of two years supervising employees.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational, planning, and project management skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong conflict resolution and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to motivate, coach, and develop employees.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with schools and community partners.
  • Strong computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and membership management software.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous Boys & Girls Club experience.
  • School-based leadership experience.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment

The physical demands described here are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, climb stairs, and actively participate in youth programming. The employee must frequently lift, carry, push, or move up to 40 pounds.

Work occurs primarily in school facilities, including classrooms, cafeterias, gyms, playgrounds, and outdoor recreation areas. Evening, weekend, and occasional travel between Club locations may be required.
