The Scale Operator/Laborer supports the Location/Scale Manager in the accurate weighing, identification, grading, processing, and documentation of incoming and outgoing scrap materials.
This position is responsible for operating scales accurately and safely, verifying customer and load information, maintaining accurate scale tickets and supporting documentation, assisting with material handling and yard operations, and providing professional customer service.
The Scale Operator/Laborer may assist with sorting, grading, unloading, processing, baling, and boxing materials as directed. The position works in an active scrap recycling environment and is expected to follow all applicable company policies, safety procedures, environmental requirements, and operational standards.

Scale Operations and Documentation
Operate scales accurately and safely in accordance with company procedures.
Verify customer information, material type, gross weight, tare weight, and other required information for incoming and outgoing loads.
Ensure scale tickets and related documentation are complete and accurate.
Obtain and attach required photographs and supporting documentation.
Follow company procedures regarding scale entries and adjustments; do not make unauthorized manual overrides.
Ensure scrap and vehicle intake information is accurately recorded and maintained.
Complete required paperwork and documentation in a timely manner.
Report discrepancies, documentation issues, or unusual transactions to the Location/Scale Manager.
Material Identification and Yard Operations
Identify, sort, unload, and grade various types of scrap metal in accordance with company procedures.
Assist with processing, sorting, grading, baling, and boxing materials as assigned.
Operate forklifts, skid steers, bobcats, or other yard equipment when trained, authorized, and assigned.
Safely move heavier materials and assist with loading and unloading activities.
Keep yard traffic moving safely and efficiently.
Assist with directing customer and vehicle traffic within designated yard areas.
Maintain organized and efficient material flow throughout the yard.
Keep work areas clean, orderly, and free of avoidable hazards.
Use available downtime productively to support yard organization and workflow efficiency.
Assist the Location/Scale Manager with operational tasks as needed.
Customer Service and Communication
Provide courteous, professional, and responsive service to customers and vendors.
Assist customers with questions regarding material identification, grading, weighing, and unloading procedures.
Communicate customer and vendor feedback to the Location/Scale Manager.
Report operational, equipment, safety, or customer-service concerns promptly.
Maintain professional communication with customers, vendors, coworkers, and management.
Participate in team meetings and other operational communications as assigned.
Operational Support
Stay informed regarding company procedures, material identification standards, and applicable operational requirements.
Support efficient yard operations and follow established work processes.
Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Location/Scale Manager that are consistent with the position and business needs.

Maintain awareness of moving vehicles, heavy equipment, scrap materials, machinery, and other workplace hazards.
Report unsafe conditions, hazards, injuries, near misses, equipment concerns, and environmental incidents promptly.
Do not bypass, disable, or remove required safety guards or protective devices.
Follow applicable procedures when working around equipment that requires servicing, maintenance, or energy isolation.
Never direct or pressure another employee, customer, vendor, or driver to violate safety requirements, company policy, or applicable law.
Maintain a clean and orderly work area and promptly address or report identified hazards.
Accurately record weights, material descriptions, grades, customer information, and documentation.
Report discrepancies and errors promptly and honestly.
Maintain integrity in all customer, vendor, and employee interactions.

High school diploma or GED.
Two (2) years of experience in a scrap metal recycling or similar industrial environment.
Experience identifying and grading various types of scrap metal.
Experience operating forklifts, skid steers, bobcats, or similar yard equipment.
Conversational Spanish language skills.
Minimum Education
No specific minimum education requirement is established for this position. A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
Experience
Two (2) years of experience in a scrap metal recycling environment is preferred.
Equivalent combinations of relevant training and experience may be considered based on the requirements of the position and applicable law.
This position is performed primarily in an active scrap recycling yard and may require work in outdoor, covered, and indoor areas.
Essential physical activities may include:
Standing and walking for extended periods during the workday.
Frequently bending, twisting, reaching, crouching, and using hands and arms.
Operating and working around forklifts, loaders, bobcats, balers, trucks, and other heavy equipment.
Directing or monitoring vehicle and pedestrian traffic in designated yard areas.
Moving, sorting, handling, and assisting with unloading scrap materials.
Lifting and carrying materials or objects weighing up to approximately 45 pounds to a height of approximately five feet when required by assigned duties.
Working around machinery noise, scrap metal, dust, debris, and other conditions common to a recycling facility.
Working outdoors in changing weather conditions.
Using required PPE and other safety equipment.
