Job description

Position

SCADA Communication Technician – required to perform preventive maintenance on Light Rail SCADA Communication systems, including variable message signs, emergency telephones, public address systems, and closed‑circuit digital television cameras.


Responsibilities


  • Install, inspect, test, diagnose, repair, and modify electrical, camera and speaker components for Light Rail wayside communications equipment.

  • Use testing and troubleshooting equipment and software to diagnose problems.

  • Respond to service emergencies and provide field troubleshooting for equipment such as variable message signs, programmable logic controllers, emergency telephones, public address systems, and closed‑circuit television cameras.

  • Prepare daily turnover logs, create and update work order records in TX Base, and complete monthly/quarterly inspection forms.

  • Attend and successfully complete all required training, including track safety, CPR, first aid, forklift certification.

  • Operate associated vehicles such as Hi‑Rail trucks, bucket trucks, and cranes.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications


  • High school diploma or GED and 3 years of experience, or

  • Associate degree and 1 year of experience.


Licensure Requirements


  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

  • Currently holds or can obtain within 21 days a Class “A” commercial driver’s license with combination vehicle, air‑brake, and general knowledge endorsements.

  • Ability to pass physical examinations, Rail Operations Rule Book, and physical agility examinations.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Electrical and electronic schematics.

  • TX Base, Microsoft Word, and Excel.

  • Hand tools and small power tools.

  • Test equipment such as oscilloscope, volt/ohm meter, optical time‑domain reflectometer, signal generators, and logic analyzers.

  • Troubleshoot electrical and communications equipment.

  • Knowledge of Internet protocol.

  • Reading, writing, and speaking English.

  • Forklift certification.

  • Pass DOT physical examination, Rail Operations Rule Book, and physical agility examinations.

Compensation and Benefits


  • Hourly pay: $42.01 for new hires; $44.35 after year one; $46.68 after year two (based on ATU salary rates).

  • Work shifts include first and second shifts; weekends and holidays may be required.

  • Union: Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) / Grade 77.

  • FLSA: Non‑Exempt.

  • Safety Sensitive: Yes (subject to random DOT drug tests).

  • Benefits include competitive salary, pension plan through Minnesota State Retirement System (MSRS), and other benefits.


Work Environment

Work is performed indoors and outdoors, in hot or cold weather; involves travel between sites; risk of electrical shock, high working places with ladders or man lifts; possible confined space entry.


Physical Requirements

Must lift up to 50 pounds, up to 100 pounds with assistance; standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing; use hands to feel; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; may need to enter confined spaces.
