Job description

The Sawmill Supervisor is a key management role responsible for overseeing all sawmill employees and operations. This position leads efforts in safety, quality, and productivity while supporting and executing company initiatives in coordination with the Plant Operations Manager. The Supervisor is accountable for producing high-quality lumber in a safe, cost-effective environment, fostering a well-trained and efficient workforce.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead, motivate, and develop sawmill operators.
  • Promote and enforce safety policies to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Review production data, schedules, and reports to assess requirements and performance.
  • Plan and manage work schedules and production sequences to meet output goals.
  • Inspect materials, products, and equipment to identify defects or malfunctions.
  • Train new employees or assign training mentors.
  • Monitor production standards using gauges, indicators, and visual checks.
  • Consistently meet production and cost targets.
  • Ensure product quality and take corrective action when needed.
  • Participate in and support action planning processes.
  • Enforce company disciplinary procedures fairly and consistently.
  • Conduct and document performance reviews and counseling.
  • Monitor and manage employee work hours and overtime.
  • Address employee concerns and resolve workplace issues.
  • Lead regular crew meetings and attend cross-department meetings.
  • Coordinate with other departments and Human Resources on staffing and operational matters.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Prior supervisory or management experience, or equivalent education
  • Solid understanding of lumber manufacturing processes
  • Proficient in computer and software applications
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Working knowledge of sawmill machinery and tools; including their design, uses, repair and maintenance
  • Effective communicator across all levels of the organization
  • Proven leadership and team collaboration skills
  • Ability to train others in equipment operation and safety procedures
  • Skilled in performance evaluation and improvement strategies
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
SAFETY
  • Must be able to follow all safety rules and regulations
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment, i.e., hardhat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and reflective wear
  • Report immediately all accidents, near-misses, property damage, equipment damage, or unsafe conditions
  • Use proper lifting technique at all times
