Liberty Trailer LLC is seeking a Hem-Saw Machine Operator to set up, operate, and maintain a Hem-Saw. You will follow work orders, verify material specs, and ensure precise cuts with proper safety protocols in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

The role requires reading prints and cut lists, selecting appropriate blades, adjusting speed and tension, and using calipers and squares for accuracy. You will work hands-on with material handling and maintain a clean, organized workstation.

Responsibilities

  • Process and stage finished parts, label for traceability.
  • Shut down and clean the machine at shift end and secure area.

Description
Position Summary

The Hem-Saw Machine Operator is a skilled and safety-focused team member responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining a Hem-Saw to cut materials according to work orders and engineering specifications.

A Full Day in This Role – Start to Finish
1. Start-of-Shift Preparation
  • Clock into the correct work order or general shift activity.
  • Inspect and clean the saw area, removing scrap or leftover materials from previous shifts.
  • Conduct a basic equipment inspection:
    • Check blade condition
    • Verify coolant levels
    • Ensure guards and safety devices are functioning
    • Confirm vise/clamps are clean and operational
  • Put on all required PPE (safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots, hearing protection).
2. Reviewing the Work Orders
  • Pull the first scheduled work order for the day.
  • Verify material type, dimensions, thickness, and cut specifications.
  • Check PDF on the tablet.
  • Confirm you have the correct raw material before loading the saw.
3. Machine Setup
  • Adjust the saw settings based on the job:
    • Blade speed
    • Tension
    • Angle adjustments
    • Vise/clamping adjustments
  • Set the proper length stop or measuring gauge for accurate repeat cuts.
  • Load material securely into the vise, ensuring alignment and safety clearance.
4. Running the First Cut
  • Begin the first cut slowly and observe:
    • Blade tracking straight
    • No unusual vibration or noise
    • Coolant flowing properly
  • Complete a first-piece check using calipers, tape measure, or square to confirm accuracy.
  • Compare the first cut to the print/work order.
  • Make adjustments if necessary before continuing production.
5. Running the Production Order
  • Continue cutting material according to the required quantities.
  • Monitor the saw throughout operation:
    • Blade sharpness
    • Straightness of cut
    • Coolant flow
    • Clamp pressure and alignment
  • Inspect parts periodically (every few cuts) to ensure they stay within tolerance.
  • Remove completed pieces and place them in the correct staging or rack location.
  • Bundle, tag, or label cut parts as required for traceability.
6. End-of-Shift Duties
  • Clean the machine and remove excess chips/scrap.
  • Check coolant levels and refill if needed.
  • Sweep and organize the surrounding work area.
  • Securely store material and finished parts.
  • Shutdown saw completely.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Prior experience using a Hem-Saw or similar horizontal/vertical band saw preferred.
  • Ability to read work orders, prints, and cut lists.
  • Understanding of proper blade selection, speed, and tension.
  • Ability to use measuring tools (tape measure, calipers, square).
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to lift raw material and finished parts safely.
Physical Requirements
  • Standing for long periods.
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs. regularly.
  • Bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, and repetitive motions.
  • Working in a manufacturing environment with noise, heat, and moving equipment.
