City of Fresno is seeking Sanitation Operators to provide green waste, refuse, and recycling collection with a focus on safety, efficiency, and courteous public service. Roles involve independent field work, adherence to schedules, and strong customer interaction.
Ideal candidates hold a high school diploma or GED, have experience with solid waste equipment or a valid Class B license, and can obtain a DMV record printout during application. Training includes interviews and background checks.
Under general supervision, Sanitation Operators provide customers with convenient, cost-effective collection services for green waste, refuse, and recyclables. Our purpose as an organization is to preserve the community’s environment by collecting and managing green waste, trash, and recyclable materials in a professional, safe, and efficient manner through teamwork, education, and high-quality service.
Sanitation Operators are responsible for collecting discarded waste materials, supporting community clean-up activities, and completing all tasks in accordance with established delivery and collection schedules. They are expected to interact with the public in a courteous and respectful manner. Operators work independently in the field and exercise sound judgment consistent with established policies and procedures.
There are several vacancies in the Department of Public Utilities, Solid Waste Management Division. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period for up to a maximum of two years at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination, however this does not assure a place on the eligibility list.
Possession of a valid Class B California Driver's License, without airbrake restriction, at time of application and maintain a valid Class B California Driver's License for the entire term of employment in this classification. APPLICANTS MUST SUBMIT, AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION, A CURRENT COPY OF THEIR DRIVING RECORD FROM THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES (DMV) ISSUED NO LATER THAN 30 DAYS PRIOR TO SUBMITTING OF APPLICATION. Applications lacking DMV printouts will be rejected.
In addition, the ideal candidates will possess strong customer service skills, possess a clean driving record, be safety-minded, and be able to deal with the public in a positive and courteous manner.
The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno.

Some positions have been designated as being "safety sensitive" and require all eligibles offered employment to successfully pass a drug test prior to employment. Federal law requires that applicants for positions involving the operation of certain transit vehicles, revenue service vehicles, the transportation of hazardous materials, or heavy equipment over 26,001 pounds requiring a commercial driver's license, must undergo pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment. This classification is subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout entire term of employment in this class.
The examination process may consist of the following:
Written Examination 100%: The written examination is designed to assess a candidate's knowledge in the following areas: ability to understand and follow written instructions, apply residential service rules, map reading, vehicle maintenance and preoperational vehicle checks, safety, and interpersonal relations/customer service.
The Written Exam has been tentatively scheduled for the week of: November 16, 2026.
Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.
The City reserves the right to amend any phase of the examination process should there be a limited number of successful candidates. Should such amendment be exercised, a candidate's final score and placement on the eligible list would be based upon the completed examination phase(s).
Candidates applying for veteran's preference are required to submit a copy of their DD214 with their application during the specified filing period. Evidence must be presented to indicate that the candidate was discharged honorably from the military service. Veterans, including City employees, must resubmit proof of honorable service for every examination for which veteran's preference credit is requested. Qualified veterans who pass the examination will have five (5) points added to their final score.
