Job summary

Mowi USA is seeking a Sanitation Manager to lead sanitation, food safety, and facility hygiene across a seafood processing environment. Qualifications

  • Preferred: Seafood HACCP certification.
  • Experience with SQF, BAP, FDA, USDA and customer audits.

Responsibilities

Summary

The Sanitation Manager is responsible for leading sanitation, food safety, and facility hygiene programs within a fresh seafood processing facility. This role ensures compliance with FDA and USDA regulations, HACCP, GMPs, SSOPs, and applicable third-party food safety standards, while supporting overall product quality, food safety, and regulatory compliance objectives. The Sanitation Manager leads sanitation teams, owns sanitation programs and documentation, and works cross-functionally with Quality, Maintenance, Production, and Warehouse to maintain a hygienic, well-controlled, and audit-ready processing environment. The role also supports food safety verification activities, continuous improvement initiatives, and oversight of facility conditions and appearance to ensure the site remains inspection-ready and visit-ready at all times.

Responsibilities
Sanitation Program Management
  • Develop, implement, and maintain SSOPs and Master Sanitation Schedules for all equipment, processing areas, and facility infrastructure.
  • Standardize sanitation methods, materials, and procedures across facilities to ensure consistent food safety and quality outcomes.
  • Ensure sanitation programs meet or exceed FDA, USDA, HACCP, customer, and third-party audit requirements.
  • Verify sanitation effectiveness through inspections, environmental monitoring results, checklists, and visual verification.
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of food safety and quality programs related to sanitation, allergen control, and preventive controls.
  • Lead, train, and supervise sanitation supervisors, leads, and technicians.
  • Ensure proper training on safe cleaning practices, chemical handling, lock-out/tag-out, scissors-lift usage, PPE usage, GMPs, and food safety protocols.
  • Promote a strong food safety, quality, and safety culture across all shifts, including overnight sanitation.
  • Coach teams on the importance of sanitation practices in preventing product contamination, quality defects, and regulatory non-compliance.
Cross-Functional Coordination
  • Partner with the Quality team on audits, inspections, environmental monitoring programs, investigations, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance and Production to support sanitary design, effective cleanouts, operational efficiency, and minimized downtime.
  • Investigate sanitation-related issues that could impact product safety, product quality, shelf life, customer satisfaction, or regulatory compliance.
  • Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action processes for customer complaints, quality incidents, and food safety events where sanitation may be a contributing factor.
  • Stay current on emerging sanitation technologies, food safety practices, and cleaning materials, and recommend improvements.
Facilities Upkeep & Contractor Oversight
  • Own overall facility condition and appearance in coordination with Maintenance, ensuring the site remains food safe, audit-ready, and customer-visit ready at all times.
  • Identify facility deficiencies that could impact sanitation, food safety, product quality, GMP compliance, or audit outcomes and drive timely corrective actions.
  • Ensure contracted work complies with food safety, sanitation, GMP, and quality requirements, including pre-work controls and post-work verification.
  • Coordinate repairs and facility improvements that enhance food safety, sanitation effectiveness, and operational performance.
Compliance & Documentation
  • Maintain complete and accurate sanitation records for regulatory inspections, audits, customer reviews, and internal assessments.
  • Support FDA, customer, and third-party audits (SQF, BAP, ASC/MSC, etc.) and ensure timely closure of findings.
  • Track sanitation KPIs and report performance against company objectives.
  • Review sanitation, environmental monitoring, and quality trend data to identify risks and drive continuous improvement.
Chemical & Resource Management
  • Manage sanitation chemical programs, inventories, and supplier relationships.
  • Ensure proper chemical labeling, storage, MSDS availability, and safe use.
  • Validate chemical concentrations, application methods, and effectiveness to support food safety and quality objectives.
  • Control sanitation labor, overtime, and supply costs while maintaining compliance and program effectiveness.
Sustainability
  • Maintain quarterly sustainability data and ensure timely entry into corporate reporting systems.
  • Lead or support sustainability-related projects as assigned.
  • Identify trends and improvement opportunities through data analysis and performance reviews.
  • Drive initiatives focused on water reduction, chemical optimization, waste reduction, and energy efficiency.

  • This role operates in a seafood processing environment, including cold and wet production areas as well as outdoors areas and dry warehouses which may be hot or cold.
  • Overnight, weekend, and on-call support will be required to support sanitation schedules and audit readiness.
  • Able to consistently meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Proper use of PPE and adherence to GMPs.
Education
  • Degree in Food Science, Supply Chain, Business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
