Job summary

The Louisiana Department of Health seeks a Sanitarian to ensure safe drinking water and protect public health in Tangipahoa Parish. The role requires licensure as a Louisiana Sanitarian or a master’s degree in a relevant field with additional experience as a sanitarian.

Position may be filled as Probationary or Promotional; mandatory seafood program requirements apply for Molluscan Shellfish duties. Apply via LDH division of human resources with reference to Office of Public Health.

Qualifications

• Possession of a current Louisiana Sanitarian's license.
• Master's degree in public health or related field plus two years of sanitarian experience can substitute for license.
• Special requirements for Molluscan Shellfish program include completion of Louisiana Boating Education and certification by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Responsibilities

• Plans, schedules and performs water sample collection for drinking water contaminants at public water system sources.
• Plans, schedules and performs Class I Surveys of public water systems.
• Provides technical assistance by interpreting monitoring report data in consultation with program staff.

Possession of a current Louisiana Sanitarian's license plus one of the following:

• Three years of experience as a sanitarian; OR
• A master's degree in public health, food science, dairy science, environmental or sanitary science, or one of the physical or biological sciences plus two years of experience as a sanitarian.
• NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Positions in the Molluscan Shellfish program require that applicants complete the Louisiana Boating Education program and be certified by the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Job Duties:

Job duties include but are not limited to:

• Plans, schedules and performs water sample collection for drinking water contaminants, including Chemical Phase 25s, Disinfection By-Products (total trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids) and Bacteriological at public water system sources, treatment facilities, and distribution systems sites within required monitoring periods
• Plans, schedules and performs Class I Surveys of public water systems within the required inspection compliance period
• Provides technical assistance to public water systems by interpreting and explaining routine bacteriological and chemical monitoring report data in consultation with laboratory staff, Safe Drinking Water Program staff and Regional Safe Drinking Water Program staff.
