Job Summary
The Sales Manager leads, motivates, and supervises the sales team at the assigned nursery location, including Sales Support, Front Counter Sales, and Sales Account Managers. This role ensures that customers receive professional, responsive service while supporting sales staff in managing customer relationships, processing orders, and resolving issues.
The Sales Manager works closely with Dispatch, Purchasing, Inventory, and other departments to ensure efficient coordination of customer orders and inventory availability. This role also maintains a strong understanding of company systems, procedures, and product knowledge in order to guide the sales team and support overall store operations.
Essential Functions
- Hire and train sales staff at the assigned nursery location.
- Supervise sales staff, evaluate performance, and provide coaching on performance or behavioral issues when necessary.
- Promote professionalism and ensure the highest level of customer satisfaction across all customer interactions.
- Assist or lead the resolution of customer issues that arise at the nursery location.
- Develop strong customer relationships and encourage the sales team to anticipate customer needs.
- Respond promptly to customer questions, inventory requests, and estimate requests.
- Demonstrate and communicate a strong understanding of nursery inventory, plant performance, product mix, and product objectives.
- Provide substitutions or recommended alternatives when requested inventory is unavailable.
- Ensure customer orders are managed effectively and invoiced accurately and on time.
- Coordinate with Dispatch, Purchasing, Customer Service, and other departments to support efficient order fulfillment.
- Assist with company initiatives including physical inventories, sales meetings, marketing activities, and sales leads.
- Provide timely feedback to other sales representatives, departments, and management regarding operational improvements or customer needs.
- Represent the company at industry trade events when needed.
Additional Responsibilities
- Support operational coordination between the sales team and yard operations.
- Assist with training and development of sales staff.
- Support company projects and initiatives as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience & Other Requirements
Required
- Knowledge of plants, nursery products, or the landscape maintenance industry.
- Strong leadership and team development skills.
- Strong customer service and relationship-building skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
- Professionalism and strong work ethic.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience working in a nursery, landscape industry, or related field.
- Experience using Microsoft Office applications and business software systems.
Preferred
- Previous supervisory or management experience.
- Experience with point-of-sale systems and inventory management software.
- Sales and customer service experience.
- Bilingual English and Spanish language skills.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This is an in-office position located at the nursery site. Remote work is not available.
The role requires frequent communication with customers, sales staff, and operational teams and may involve occasional movement between office and yard environments.
Physical requirements include:
- Remaining in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods.
- Frequent typing and computer data entry including 10-key functions.
- Use of hands and fingers for typing, filing, and operating office equipment.
- Occasional walking through nursery yard areas which may include uneven ground surfaces and exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
- Lifting up to 20 lbs approximately 20% of the time.
