Job summary

Goodwill of Southern New England in Hamden, CT is seeking a Sales Associate to support donation intake and resale operations. You will sort, hang, and price merchandise, assist customers, operate the cash register, and help maintain attractive displays.

The role requires weekend and evening hours, with emphasis on friendly service, accuracy in transactions, and teamwork under supervision of the Store Manager. Previous retail experience is helpful, but training is provided.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred, not required; and one to three months related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Students under 18 may be hired for part-time positions but cannot operate certain hazardous equipment and must follow CT DOL hours rules for minors.

Responsibilities

  • Set up advertising displays or arrange merchandise to promote sales.
  • Obtain merchandise requested by customer and answer questions about location, price, and use.
  • Total price and tax, calculate discounts, and operate cash register.
  • Wrap or bag merchandise for customers.
  • Sort and hang/display merchandise; discard or set aside damaged items.
  • Receive donated merchandise and write receipts when requested.
  • Stock shelves and keep areas clean; prepare inventory as required.
  • Assist at designated outlets and perform other store duties as assigned.

Hourly Pay Range: $16.94 - $22.70

Summary

Performs generally routine duties to sort donated merchandise for resale in retail outlet (production standard of 100-150 garments sorted in an hour) and hang merchandise for resale in retail outlet (production standard of 100-150 garments hung in an hour). Obtains or receives merchandise, completes customer purchases and performs various duties related to customer service. Works under the direct supervision of the Store Manager.

Special Requirements

Will typically be required to work regular weekend (Saturday, Sunday), holiday and evening hours customary to the retail trade. Sales Associate may be cross‑trained to perform duties of a Janitor, Retail Material Handler and Retail Material Sorter based on business necessity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Customer Service / Sales
  • Set up advertising displays or arrange merchandise on counters or tables to promote sales.
  • Obtain merchandise requested by customer.
  • Answer customer's questions concerning location, price, and use of merchandise.
  • Total price and tax on merchandise purchased by customer to determine bill.
  • Calculate sales discount to determine price.
  • Operate cash register. Accept payment and make change.
  • Wrap or bag merchandise for customers.
Sorting / Pricing Merchandise
  • Sort and hang or display merchandise for resale.
  • Discard unusable items or set aside for salvage or repair.
  • Make minor repairs and clean merchandise, as required and as necessary.
  • Set aside merchandise for supervisor's instruction if damaged or if value is undetermined.
  • Stamp, mark or tag prices on merchandise.
  • Meet with supervisor on a regular basis to review quality, quantity, style and value requirements of sorting and other guidelines.
  • Receive merchandise donated by customer and write up receipt, if requested.
Material Handling
  • Help unload truck as required, sort and grade newly arrived goods.
  • Stock shelves, counters or tables with merchandise.
  • Clean shelves, counters and tables.
  • Prepare inventory of stock, as required.
Other Duties
  • Assist at designated retail outlets, as assigned, to sort, price, set up displays and to assist in other retail store duties.
  • Perform other related essential duties as required or assigned by supervisor.
Requirements
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred, not required; and one to three months related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Students under the age of 18 years still enrolled in High School may be hired to fill part‑time positions but may not operate the compactor, floor cleaning machine, straddle stacker or any other hazardous equipment and must abide by the CT DOL regulations regarding hours of work for minors in the workplace.
Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to speak effectively with customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add and subtract two‑digit numbers and to multiply and divide. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one‑ or two‑step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

Physical Demands

Employee regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Material handling duties may require lifting above shoulder height and may require repetitive motion while sorting, hanging and ticketing merchandise. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision.

Requirements for Personal Protective Equipment (ppe)

Protective eyewear must be worn at all times while preparing cleaning solution for floor cleaning machine and while dispensing fluid into the machine. Protective gloves (cloth/leather) and protective eyewear must be worn at all times while using pushstick to propel material into trash compactor. Latex gloves are made available for any employee engaged in sorting credentials but are not required.

Work Environment

Employee occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock. Noise level usually moderate and typical of a busy retail environment.
