Job description

SUMMARY

Performs with minimal supervision, all activities relating to the sterile processing and inventory management of surgical sets, equipment, medical supplies, endoscopy and linen in support of Morton Hospital and satellite customers. Responsible for direct support function of Inventory Management in the areas of SPD stock levels, OR case cart management, and Patient Care Procedure Carts. Monitors and documents all aspects of sterile processing procedures to ensure the highest level of quality assurance standards are performed accurately. Requires schedule flexibility to work alternate shifts, weekends, and holidays to accommodate staffing needs. RESPONSIBILITIES
PROCESSING
  • Process surgical instrumentation, sets, equipment, expendable medical supplies, and linen in accordance with AAMI and JCAHO standards and Infection Control Guidelines.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of proper methods of the decontamination of surgical instruments, endoscopes, and equipment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of proper preparation, assembly and packaging using rigid containers, peel pouches and wraps.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the application of the proper HLD and sterilization methods conducive to the items being processed or sterilized.
INSTRUMENT, EQUIPMENT, AND SUPPLIES – ASSEMBLY AND PREPARATION
  • Apply numerous preparation techniques to insure sterilization and damage prevention.
  • Inspect items for serviceability and function.
  • Inspect sets and packages to ensure integrity and proper preparation.
STERILIZATION – PROCESSING PROCEDURES
  • Test, monitor, handle, and load items for sterilization using Prev Vac/Gravity Steam, Sterrad, Steris Sterilizers and HLD.
  • Demonstrate proper loading techniques, handling techniques, testing procedures and monitoring procedures.
INVENTORY MANAGEMENT
  • Reorder, store, locate and distribute processed and stocked items in SPD.
  • Fill surgical case carts; restock patient care procedure carts; restock department stock par levels.
SPD EMPLOYEE EDUCATION AND TRAINING COMPLIANCE
  • Attend all mandatory department in-service programs and departmental meetings related to quality improvement and educational in‑services.
  • Annotate and record instructional or informative hard copy education.
  • Display interest and participatory attitude related to Quality Improvement Programs.
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
  • Maintain awareness and familiarity with department policies and procedures:

QUALIFICATIONS
  • 1 year experience as Sterile Processing/CPD Tech.
  • Proficient with Meditech, MS Word, and MS Excel.
  • Knowledge of sterile technique, sterilization, care and handling of surgical instrumentation, tray preparation, and special procedure items.
  • Ability to operate all sterilization equipment.
  • Ability to comply with all department and hospital procedures and policies.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English clearly.
  • Good written and oral skills, knowledge of medical terminology required.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to act in a respectful and professional manner at all times even under stressful situations.
EDUCATION
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Active Certified/Registered Central Supply Technician (CRCST) status.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee will perform or have exposure to the following 25–50%: taste or smell; lift up to 50 lbs; exposure to flammable, explosive gases; exposure to dust or other irritants; exposure to grease or oils. Vision requirements: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception; ability to adjust focus. Safety equipment used while performing this job: safety eye glasses, face shields, surgical mask and gown, gloves.
