Job summary

Recology is seeking a Safety Trainer in Vacaville to lead planning, development, and delivery of safety and hazardous waste handling training for employees. You will coordinate with management and the Safety Manager to identify training needs and implement effective programs across the operation.

The role requires testing progress, documenting compliance with DOT/OSHA, and occasionally performing off-site observations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Three years related experience and knowledge of safety practices, techniques, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of DOT laws and regulations.
  • Current developments and trends in areas of expertise.
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office suite of applications.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Commercial Driver's License required upon hire or within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, and direct training for the assigned area.

  • Select instructional procedures and organize training materials.
  • Conduct safety and hazardous waste handling training for employees.
  • Test trainees to measure progress and training effectiveness.
  • Recommend employees for internal training programs.
  • May perform off-site safety observations.
  • Document compliance with federal and state agencies such as DOT and OSHA.
  • Provide broad health, safety, and environmental compliance services as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Role of the Safety Trainer

Under general direction, accountable for planning, coordinating, and directing training for assigned functional area. Regularly requires eliciting results directly from groups of trainees of varying size.

  • Partners with management and Safety Manager to determine training requirements.
  • Formulates training, programs, and schedules for review, based on identified training needs for new or existing processes, programs and procedures. May include but is not limited to: pre-employment driver skills screening, driver orientation, equipment usage, and driver proficiency review.
  • Plans, develops, and conducts safety and hazardous waste handling training programs for employees, with particular attention to those in positions of higher risk.
  • Selects appropriate instructional procedures or methods, i.e., individual or group training, group presentations, demonstrations, or simulation exercises. Chooses alternative procedures, when required.
  • Organizes and develops training manuals, reference library, etc. Assists in testing and evaluation procedures. Develops and maintains broad understanding of appropriate processes, programs, and procedures.
  • Plans and conducts training events.
  • Test trainees to measure progress and to evaluate effectiveness of training.
  • Recommends employees for participation in internal training programs.
  • May perform off-site safety observations.
  • Document compliance and enforcement of federal and state agencies such as Department of Transportation and OSHA.
  • Provides broad health, safety, and environmental compliance services, as needed in the absence of regular safety and compliance staff (back-up role only).
  • Other duties as assigned.
