Position Summary

The SDU-11 Safety Representative provides active field safety coverage for interior and exterior project work. The role observes work conditions, verifies required hazard controls, documents safety observations and corrective actions, supports incident and near-miss reporting, and immediately escalates unsafe conditions. Coverage may be assigned to interior work, exterior work, or both based on the daily work plan. Interior emphasis includes confined space activities, personal protective equipment, blasting and coating hazards, and work-area controls. Exterior emphasis includes cranes, rigging, staging, logistics, material movement, traffic and pedestrian controls, and other outside work activities.

Authority and Accountability
  • Identify hazards and require immediate correction of unsafe conditions within assigned authority.
  • Stop or pause work when an imminent or uncontrolled hazard is observed, then immediately notify the Certified Safety Professional and Project Superintendent.
  • Escalate unresolved hazards, repeated noncompliance, stop-work concerns, incidents, near misses, and required corrective actions through the defined chain of command.
  • Document observations accurately and promptly without altering source information, backdating records, or marking corrective actions complete without verification.
  • Maintain professional, visible, and impartial safety presence across assigned work areas.
Essential Functions
  • Daily Field Safety Coverage
  • Perform routine and task-specific observations of assigned interior and/or exterior work areas throughout the shift.
  • Review planned work, job safety analyses, permits, task-specific plans, and required controls before or during execution as assigned.
  • Verify that employees understand and follow required PPE, access controls, barricades, housekeeping, line-of-fire controls, and safe-work practices.
  • Coordinate observed hazards and immediate corrections with supervision, the Certified Safety Professional, and affected workers.
  • Interior Work Safety
  • Observe confined space activities and verify required entry; attendant, communication, rescue, ventilation, access, and accountability controls are in place as applicable.
  • Verify PPE and work controls for blasting, surface preparation, coating, adhesive, cleaning, and related interior activities.
  • Coordinate with the Certified Industrial Hygienist and Industrial Hygienist Technician when monitoring, respiratory protection, ventilation, or exposure-control concerns arise.
  • Identify unsafe conditions involving temporary lighting, hoses, cords, access routes, material staging, and simultaneous operations inside the tank.
  • Exterior Work Safety
  • Observe crane, hoisting, rigging, staging, scaffold, aerial-lift, forklift, delivery, and material-movement activities within assigned scope.
  • Verify exclusion zones, spotters, tag lines, lift-area controls, pedestrian separation, traffic flow, and staging controls are maintained as required.
  • Monitor exterior housekeeping, slips and trips, weather exposure, access routes, equipment interfaces, and changing site conditions.
  • Coordinate safety concerns with operators, riggers, logistics personnel, supervision, and the project safety team.
  • Observations, Corrective Actions and Reporting
  • Complete daily safety observations and identify corrective action needs using approved paper or electronic forms.
  • Document the observed condition, immediate control, responsible party, required follow-up, and status without unsupported assumptions.
  • Submit completed records for entry into the Safety Log, SharePoint, Microsoft Lists, Power BI inputs, or other approved project system.
  • Follow open corrective actions through verification or elevate overdue and unresolved items.
  • Incident, Near-Miss and Emergency Support
  • Immediately report incidents, near misses, property damage, environmental releases, first-aid events, and abnormal conditions through the required notification process.
  • Preserve the scene and relevant information when directed and support accurate incident or near-miss documentation.
  • Participate in fact gathering, causal reviews, corrective-action tracking, and lessons-learned communication as assigned.
  • Support emergency response, evacuation, accountability, and work-area control in accordance with approved project procedures.
  • Meetings, Training and Coordination
  • Participate in pre-job briefings, toolbox talks, daily coordination discussions, and weekly safety reviews as required.
  • Communicate recurring hazards, negative trends, positive observations, training needs, and unresolved corrective actions to the Certified Safety Professional.
  • Support orientation, refresher, and task-specific safety communication when assigned and qualified.
  • Coordinate with Project Superintendent, field supervision, industrial hygiene, QA/QC, Project Controls, and Project Administration to ensure safety records are complete and routed correctly.
