CAMPUS SAFETY - Safety Systems Coordinator

Position summary

The Safety Systems Coordinator is one of the Office of Campus Safety’s program specialists. This role is primarily responsible for managing the University’s security camera program, drone program, and AUID Card Photos. It also serves as the Campus Safety liaison for other safety systems across campus and assists with website management and the GIS program.

Secondary responsibilities include working as an essential employee covering as a floater in dispatch and/or patrol which can include working during a section of a 24 hour day, working weekends and holidays, including during Sabbath hours.

Qualifications summary

This position requires skills and experience in installation work (network cables, tools, aerial lifts, etc.), data management, and software use.

This position requires employees who perform well under high-stress situations and have excellent customer service skills. They must be detail oriented and capable of managing their daily tasks with little to no supervision. They must have great communication skills both verbally and in writing.

Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities
  • Security Cameras
    • Work with Command to identify security camera coverage needs/gaps
    • Provide recommendations on security camera type/model, placement, and priority for installation.
    • Generate estimated project quotes for individual camera projects while working with Command to obtain necessary parts/materials for installation.
    • Complete installation of security cameras through pulling network cables, terminating ends, landing the cables and mounting/aiming the security camera in varying surfaces both interior and exterior.
    • Provide Command with recommendations to modify/update existing security camera models/placements.
    • Manage security camera settings to provide optimal performance meeting safety and security objectives.
    • Work with Command to maintain accurate financial records and inventory.
    • Where applicable, coordinate work with ITS and relevant Building Managers.
    • Work with Command on granting security camera access for view stations.
  • Drone
    • Work with Command to develop search and rescue protocols involving drone deployment.
    • Manage drone fleet and drone selection.
    • Work with Safety & Facilities to facilitate other drone applications for the campus, including facility assessment/documentation and any marketing related needs.
    • Able to respond off-duty as drone pilot for campus emergencies.
  • GIS
    • Work with GIS Analyst to provide support in collection of GIS data through on-site assessments.
    • Work with GIS Analyst to provide support in dissemination of GIS data in the form of maps, inventories/tables, or statistical reports.
    • Work with GIS Analyst to maintain GIS data.
  • System Liaison
    • Represent Safety needs with campus units in areas such as card access, security alarms, software, or other campus systems.
    • This may include technical expertise or physical assistance in installation etc.
  • Officer General
    • Provides direction, support, and service to the campus in both emergency and non-emergency situations.
    • Investigates all matters reported to the Office of Campus Safety, which could include burglaries, auto theft, vehicles accidents, lost and found property, fights, and/or any other criminal matter or reported/referred code of conduction violations which occurs on campus.
    • Creation and/or completion of incident reports
    • Maintains a professional skill level through continuing education courses pertaining to patrol operations, dispatch operations, and emergency preparedness.
    • Other duties as assigned.
  • Patrol Division
    • Coordinates with local fire and law enforcement personnel for their response to the campus, assisting them with the performance of their duties.
    • Crowd control/management for graduation events or special events.
    • Enforces parking/driving regulations through the issuing of citations and arrangements/decisions to immobilize/or tow vehicles.
    • Ensures all campus buildings are secured and cleared of non-authorized individuals on a daily basis per the individual department schedule.
    • Ensures operational readiness through inventory and maintenance of supplies and equipment.
    • Ensures proper recording, accuracy, safekeeping, and follow-through of all investigative matters assigned.
    • Learns and enforces Standard Operating Procedures, Student Code of Conduct and general University policy.
    • Operates University vehicles during all weather conditions, including inclement weather.
    • Patrols the campus grounds and buildings by foot and vehicle for the intent of deterring crime on campus, identifying and responding to suspicious situations/individuals and hazardous environments.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Provides financial escorts, providing for the safety/transport of the escorted or directly responsible for the safety/transport of monetary funds to and from off campus.
    • Provides service assistance calls to the campus community which may consist of escorts, jumpstarts, vehicle lock-outs, etc.
    • Reports in proper attire and is fit for duty for a minimum of ten minutes prior to shift start.
    • Reports maintenance problems and submits work orders to their supervisor who refers/or contacts the department responsible for mitigation.
    • Responds to all emergency calls on campus.
    • Responds to any disturbance, fight or domestic disputes reported on campus.
    • Responds to fire and security alarms.
    • Responsible for the proper care and maintenance of uniform and equipment, vehicle, radio, keys, etc.
  • Dispatch Division
    • Communicates with local emergency services for response assistance.
    • Coordinates with on campus departments for report investigation.
    • Enforce parking & traffic regulations; including via video systems.
    • Ensures operational readiness through inventory and maintenance of supplies and equipment.
    • Ensures proper recording, accuracy, safekeeping, and follow-through of all investigative matters assigned.
    • Investigates and/or dispatches patrol officer for all matters reported to the Office of campus Safety, which could include burglaries, auto theft, vehicle accidents, lost and found property, fights, and or any other criminal matter or reported/referred code of conduction violations which occurs on campus.
    • Maintains communication and documents activity of patrol officers.
    • Monitor 911 Onsite Notification Line for outgoing 911 emergency phone calls.
    • Monitor Access Control System.
    • Monitor both fire and security alarm reporting system.
    • Monitors campus surveillance system.
    • Performs University Switchboard duties daily 5pm-9am (shift dependent).
    • Performs vehicle and bicycle registration activities.
    • Provides customer service activities for registration, citations, appeals, and general information.
    • Receive Lost/Found items for campus with proper documentation.
    • Receive reports from anonymous Tip Line.
    • Receives after-hours calls on behalf of University Housing Office (shift dependent).
    • Receives after-hours emergency call requests for Plant Services (shift dependent).
    • Regulates nighttime access onto the campus via gatehouse activities (shift dependent).
    • Responsible to activate University Emergency Alert System.
    • Searches applicable databases for vehicles, citations, and historical files as necessary including NIDA, Banner and vault.
    • Submit End of Shift (EOS) Reports.

Other duties may be assigned.

Supervisory responsibilities

While this position does not provide employee correction or evaluation, they are responsible to provide the campus with direction in relation to emergencies or enforcing University policies.

Rank may vary by applicant and additional supervisory/leadership expectations may exist depending on rank assigned (Officer, Senior, Sgt, Staff Sgt).

Education, Experience, and/or Certifications

Must have or be capable of obtaining certifications:

  • FAA Drone Operator/Pilot Certification
  • Aerial Lift Operator Certification
  • As a Campus Safety employee
    • APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator Language Skills
    • A formal law enforcement training academy (BCSD Reserve Officer Training Academy accepted)
    • Maintain certifications in CPR, First Aid and AED.
    • FEMA IS 100, 200, 700, and 800
    • Additional cross-training and certification with Patrol is preferred. Must be capable of obtaining certification in:
      • Defensive Tactics (PPCT & OCAT)
      • Police One Certifications

Once trained, this position should function with limited direction and be responsible to identify daily tasks for the completion of their duties.

This position should be able to identify needs, priorities, and areas to work on with little to no direction.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, distances, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to calculate statistical data.

In the completion of these activities an employee will have access to a patrol vehicle, office, and aerial lifts.

While completing these duties, the employee will be walking through campus grounds including sidewalks, parking lots, roadways, grass areas, and wooded trails. The employee will also be accessing buildings, from common spaces to classrooms, labs, mechanical/electrical rooms, residential spaces, roof-tops, or any other area belonging to the University. The employee may also work at a desk for 8-12 hour shifts.The employee may also work from elevated platforms and aerial lifts.
