Job Summary:

The Safety Specialist II serves as the field safety professional and technical resource for Warehouse, Transport, and Engineering operations. The role maintains the field presence expected of a Safety Specialist while assuming greater responsibility for the quality and consistency of Safety Department work and for programs spanning multiple sites or company-wide operations.

This position leads complex safety investigations, manages assigned company-wide safety programs, and represents the company in interactions with clients and regulatory agencies when the Director of Safety is unavailable.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None at this time.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Technical Authority and Work Product Review

• Review investigation reports, corrective actions, JHAs, and procedures produced by other safety staff before issue, and return work that will not stand up under regulatory or legal scrutiny
• Serve as the technical reference point for other safety staff on regulatory interpretation, hazard analysis, and control selection
• Provide a documented second opinion on stop-work decisions that are challenged by operations
• Escalate to the Director when a review identifies a systemic issue rather than an isolated error

Complex Investigation Leadership

• Lead investigations across all segments
• Apply the company three-tier methodology, serving as the internal lead for TapRooT® analysis on SIF-potential events
• Identify the organizational and systemic conditions that made the error likely before addressing individual performance
• Produce investigation reports that are factual and complete
• Track corrective actions to verified closure rather than to reported completion

Field Presence

• Maintain a documented inspection and observation cadence across assigned sites and projects
• Respond on short notice to incidents, near misses, regulatory inspections, and start-up activity at any location, including outside normal business hours
• Serve as the senior safety contact for project managers, client representatives, and suppliers
• Support Field Operations on site set-up, mobilization, and demobilization activities as business demand requires
• Provide coverage for other safety staff during absence, surge, or incident response

Regulatory Representation

• Represent the company during OSHA, state plan, and environmental agency inspections when the Director is unavailable
• Manage document production and inspector site walks, and prepare the written response record
• Maintain working knowledge of federal OSHA and applicable state plan requirements in every state where the company operates
• Perform safety audits and prequalification submissions

Training and Development of Others

• Serve as powered industrial truck trainer and evaluator of record under 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(2)(iii), and qualify other staff to hold that role
• Mentor Safety Specialists and the Safety Coordinator on investigation technique, written work product, and holding a position with operations leadership
• Build and deliver training content reflecting actual site conditions and recent events
• Coach supervisors and crew leads on pre-shift briefing facilitation and JHA development
• Evaluate training effectiveness through field observation

Contractor and Multi-Employer Oversight

• Set and enforce supplier safety requirements across all segments
• Stop work when an imminent danger condition exists, document the condition, and verify correction before restart
• Conduct pre-mobilization briefings and site-specific orientations for supplier crews
• Document shared-space and multi-employer responsibilities where a landlord, client, or co-tenant controls part of a site

Education and Experience:

Required

• Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, environmental science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and field experience
• 5 or more years of field safety experience in industrial, construction, warehousing, or project environments, including experience across more than one operating environment
• Associate Safety Professional (ASP) with a documented path to CSP
• Base location in the Eastern or Central time zone preferred, near a major airport
• Demonstrated ability to write clearly and accurately under time pressure
• OSHA 30-Hour Construction and General Industry
• Demonstrated willingness to stop work and hold that position with operations leadership under schedule pressure
• Availability to respond to sites on short notice, including outside normal business hours
• Valid driver license and acceptable driving record. Travel can be up to 75 percent

Preferred

• Environmental compliance experience: RCRA generator requirements, SPCC
• TapRooT® or comparable advanced root cause analysis certification
• Experience with contractor management platforms such as ISN
• Multi-jurisdiction experience across state plan and federal OSHA states
• Experience with heavy haul, crane and rigging, renewable energy, or utility-scale battery storage operations
• Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer (OSHA 500 or 501)

Physical Requirements:

Work is performed primarily at active warehouse, laydown, and project sites across multiple states. Expected exposures include:

• Traveling up to 75%
• Non-climate-controlled buildings and outdoor sites in heat, cold, wind, and precipitation
• Powered industrial trucks, cranes, and mobile equipment operating in shared space
• Dock edges, elevated racking, uneven terrain, and areas adjacent to confined spaces
• Noise, airborne dust, and diesel or propane exhaust

The role requires the ability to:

• Remain on foot and cover uneven ground for extended periods during site walks
• Climb ladders and fixed structures to reach inspection points
• Bend, twist, reach, push, pull, and lift up to 50 lbs.
• Operate a powered industrial truck for demonstration and evaluation purposes
• Wear required PPE for full shifts, including hard hat, safety footwear, eye protection, and high-visibility apparel
• Drive extended distances and travel by air on short notice
