Job summary

The AES Corporation in Ohio is seeking a Safety Specialist II to lead the Safety Management System across the AES Ohio Transmission & Distribution. Under the Health & Safety manager, you will drive safety culture, risk management, and performance improvement in field operations.

You will develop annual work plans, support audits, train employees and contractors, and coordinate corrective actions. Travel to field sites will be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Occupational Safety, EHS, or related field preferred.
  • 2–4 years of relevant safety experience.
  • Transmission & Distribution utility safety experience preferred.
  • Experience in utility, electric transmission, distribution, construction, or field operations preferred.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.
  • Professional Health & Safety certifications preferred.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with employees, contractors, supervisors, managers, and external stakeholders.
  • Willingness and ability to regularly travel to field locations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain compliance with all applicable Health & Safety regulations, AES Health & Safety Standards, and business-specific requirements.
  • Develop and execute Annual Work Plans designed to achieve Health & Safety objectives, goals, and KPIs.
  • Participate in AES Health & Safety audits and assessments, including corrective action plans.
  • Ensure application of Hierarchy of Controls during hazard analyses and JHAs/JSAs.
  • Participate in Incident Management Program and lead investigations with TapRooT methodology.
  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver Health & Safety training for employees and contractors.
  • Oversee Proactive Safety Program, conduct Safety Walks and inspections, close actions timely.
  • Provide leadership for Health & Safety programs for AES and contractor employees.
  • Collaborate across departments to identify risks and improve safety performance.
  • Serve as safety culture ambassador, promote engagement and hazard awareness.
  • Prepare weekly to annual Health & Safety performance reports with KPIs.
  • Assist in Safety Day planning and emergency drills; support storm/recovery safety activities.
  • Communicate with regulators (OSHA) and external stakeholders; support special initiatives.

Job Description Summary
  • Under the supervision of the US Utilities Transmission & Distribution Health & Safety Manager, the Safety Specialist II is responsible for the implementation, execution, and continuous improvement of the Safety Management System (SMS) across the AES Ohio Transmission & Distribution.
  • This role provides leadership and technical expertise in Health & Safety programs, with a strong focus on safety culture, performance improvement, risk management, AES Health & Safety Standards compliance, and applicable Health & Safety regulations. The Safety Specialist II will serve as a key field resource supporting employees, contractors, and business leaders in achieving the company’s safety objectives and goals.
Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable Health & Safety regulations, AES Health & Safety Standards, and business-specific requirements.
  • Develop and execute Annual Work Plans designed to achieve established Health & Safety objectives, goals, and key performance indicators (KPIs), with approval from the T&D Safety Manager.
  • Actively participate in AES Health & Safety audits and assessments, including the development, implementation, and timely follow-up of corrective action plans.
  • Ensure the effective application of the Hierarchy of Controls when conducting General Hazard Assessments, Risk Analyses, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs).
  • Actively participate in the Incident Management Program in accordance with AES Health & Safety Standards and OSHA requirements. Lead and/or support incident investigations, with particular emphasis on proactive reporting and investigation of non-injury Significant Incident Potential (SIP) events using TapRooT® methodology.
  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver Health & Safety training programs for employees and contractors, including new-hire orientation, refresher training, job-specific safety training, and training related to applicable regulations, company standards, procedures, and identified safety risks. Evaluate training effectiveness and continuously improve training content based on field observations, incident trends, regulatory requirements, and business needs
  • Oversee the implementation and execution of the Proactive Safety Program. Conduct regular field and facility visits, including Safety Walks, Work Activity Observations, Safety Inspections, and other proactive safety activities. Ensure identified actions are appropriately documented, communicated, and closed in a timely manner.
  • Provide leadership and technical expertise for Health & Safety programs and initiatives supporting both AES and contractor employees, with a primary focus on field operations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and various departments across the organization to identify risks, implement solutions, and continuously improve safety performance.
  • Serve as a safety culture ambassador by promoting employee engagement, accountability, hazard awareness, and continuous improvement throughout the organization.
  • Prepare and communicate Health & Safety performance reports on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis, including key trends, KPIs, observations, and action items.
  • Actively participate in the planning and execution of Safety Day activities and other safety engagement initiatives.
  • Plan and execute emergency response drills in accordance with established Emergency Action Plans.
  • Support the planning and execution of General Safety Orientations for contractors during storm recovery and other emergency response activities.
  • Communicate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies and authorities such as OSHA.
  • Support Health & Safety special assignments, initiatives, and projects as needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Occupational Safety, EHS, or a related field preferred;
