Job summary

Allied Mineral Products in Columbus, Ohio, is seeking a Safety Specialist responsible for identifying, analyzing, and evaluating company risk and compliance to assure the safety and health of employees, contractors, and visitors by providing a safe environment and work practices through education and training.

The role collaborates with the EHS team to monitor hazards, conduct inspections, report incidents, and support regulatory reporting and training programs across the site.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental, Health and Safety or related discipline or equivalent experience.
  • At least 1 year of work experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Proficiency in English; bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support implementation of EHS policies, procedures and programs.
  • Identify hazards and follow up on corrective actions to ensure safe work practices.
  • Conduct routine EHS inspections, observations, and compliance audits.
  • Report incidents and assist investigations and corrective actions.
  • Assist with regulatory reports, permits and EHS documentation.
  • Travel between North American locations may be required.

Job description

Allied Mineral Products is a leading manufacturer of monolithic refractories worldwide, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. We are currently seeking aSafety Specialist who is responsible for identifying, analyzing, and evaluating company risk and compliance to assure the immediate and long-term safety and health of employees, contractors and visitors by providing a safe environment and work practices through education and training. This position is also responsible for assisting, monitoring and detecting hazards within the plant and other company facilities. This includes noting any infractions or violations of applicable laws and recommending or taking immediate corrective actions, as necessary. This position may support Allied’s other North American plants with any Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) matters.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support implementation of EHS policies, procedures, and programs and help employees understand applicable requirements.
  • Promote a safe and healthy work environment by identifying hazards, reporting concerns, and following up on corrective actions.
  • Conduct routine EHS inspections, observations, and compliance audits and assist with tracking corrective actions to completion.
  • Report and document incidents, injuries, near misses, spills, and unsafe conditions and assist with investigations and corrective actions.
  • Support initiatives and projects designed to reduce workplace injuries, environmental impacts, and operational risks.
  • Work closely with the EHS Coordinator, Occupational Health Nurse, employees, and site leadership on day-to-day EHS activities.
  • Support compliance with applicable federal, state, and local EHS regulations and company requirements.
  • Assist with collecting information and maintaining records needed for regulatory reports, permits, and other EHS documentation.
  • Assist with industrial hygiene activities, including air quality, dust, silica, noise, fumes, and other exposure monitoring.
  • Assist with the proper identification, handling, storage, testing, and disposal of hazardous, non-hazardous, and universal waste.
  • Assist with developing, reviewing, and updating EHS procedures, programs, and work instructions.
  • Participate in EHS committees and meetings, including preparing agendas, documenting minutes, and tracking action items.
  • Assist with new-hire EHS orientation and other required employee, contractor, and temporary-worker training.
  • Support emergency preparedness activities, including evacuation drills and other site emergency exercises.
  • Monitor EHS regulatory developments and assist with evaluating their applicability to site operations.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce or eliminate hazards and improve EHS performance.
  • Consistently demonstrate safe work practices, including proper use of PPE and compliance with site EHS requirements.
  • Support other EHS activities and improvement initiatives as assigned.
  • Travel between North American locations may be required to support EHS activities and coordinate efforts across sites.
OTHER DUTIES:
  • Maintain files and calendar of events.
  • Assist with Human Resources, Operations, Maintenance and Sales, as necessary.
Qualifications
  • Bachelors’ degree in Environmental, Health and Safety, or related discipline, or equivalent experience is required.
  • Must have a minimum of 1 year work experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Proficiency in English required; bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and understanding of local, federal, and state laws is required.
  • Must be proficient with MS Office applications
  • Must demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be self-motivated, a team player and have strong attention to detail.
  • Willing to travel domestic if needed
  • Must be able to work flexible hours as needed.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as required.
  • Combination of Office and Plant Floor environments.
  • Required to follow Allied Mineral Products’ Safety & Health policy and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as appropriate.
  • Occasional domestic travel.
  • Must be able to safely wear a tight-fitting half-face respirator and meet applicable respirator fit and facial-hair requirements.
