Job description

Job Title: Site Safety Representative Substation & Data Center Projects

This role serves as the full-time on-site safety representative for greenfield and upgrade substation projects that support mission-critical facilities such as data centers, renewable energy assets, and power generation sites. You provide comprehensive safety oversight and management for substation foundations, inside electrical work, and substation structures, acting as an owners representative while overseeing subcontracted construction work. The position is field-based, requires national travel, and focuses on maintaining rigorous safety standards, especially around Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and NFPA 70/70E compliance in complex electrical environments.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the full-time on-site safety representative for substation construction and upgrade projects, including greenfield builds for data centers.
  • Provide safety oversight and management for substation foundations, inside electrical work, & substation structures, including tie-ins for battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar, wind, data centers, and other critical facilities.
  • Act in an owners representative capacity while overseeing subcontracted construction work and ensuring alignment with project safety expectations.
  • Oversee and support safety performance for field personnel, typically ranging from 1 to 25 workers per project.
  • Monitor daily field activities to identify, assess, and mitigate safety risks on substation and inside electrical job sites.
  • Ensure subcontractors consistently follow all project-specific safety plans, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and walkthroughs of substation and inside electrical work areas to verify compliance and identify hazards.
  • Document safety observations, inspections, & corrective actions using tablets and computer-based systems.
  • Report safety activities, incidents, near misses, & corrective measures in a timely and accurate manner through IT-based reporting tools.
  • Support incident investigations and root cause analyses, & help develop and implement preventive actions.
  • Communicate safety expectations clearly to subcontractors & field personnel, reinforcing a strong safety culture on site.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with project teams, field supervisors, & subcontractors to resolve safety concerns and implement corrective measures.
  • Provide ongoing safety guidance, coaching, & mentorship to field personnel to promote safe work practices & hazard awareness.
  • Support the implementation, enforcement, & continuous improvement of site-specific safety programs and procedures.
  • Ensure strict adherence to Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and NFPA 70/70E standards, particularly for substation downstream systems feeding data centers and other critical loads.
  • Work closely with operations teams to manage downstream LOTO for utility feeds, medium-voltage switchgear, & low-voltage loads, ensuring safe isolation of components such as UPS and PDUs without causing facility-wide outages or arc flash events.
  • Maintain accurate safety records and documentation for regulatory compliance and internal reporting.
  • Travel to various substation project sites across the country as project needs require, adapting to changing locations and project scopes.
Essential Skills
  • Proven substation safety management and oversight experience working for a general contractor (GC), engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm, or owner.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as the full-time site safety representative for a substation build or power generation project, with strong preference for substation work.
  • Strong expertise in Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and NFPA 70 / NFPA 70E electrical safety standards.
  • Ability to manage and oversee subcontractors effectively, including enforcing safety requirements and resolving safety-related issues.
  • High proficiency with IT systems for reporting safety activities, incidents, near misses, and corrective actions.
  • Comfort using tablets and computers to document safety inspections, observations, and daily reports.
  • Ability and willingness to travel nationally to project sites across the United States.
  • Solid understanding of construction safety principles in substation, data center, and power plant environments.
  • Completion of OSHA 30-hour training.
  • Current certification in CPR and AED (if required by project standards).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Possession of at least one of the following professional safety certifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Construction Health and Safety Technologist (CHST), Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST), Graduate or Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), or Safety Trained Supervisor Construction (STS-C).
  • Experience with mission-critical environments such as data centers, including understanding of downstream electrical systems like UPS and PDUs.
  • Experience on projects involving battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar, wind, and other renewable or critical power infrastructure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and coach diverse field teams on safe work practices.
  • Ability to interpret and apply OSHA standards and other relevant safety regulations to complex electrical and construction environments.
  • Organized and detail-oriented approach to recordkeeping and documentation for compliance and internal audits.
  • Adaptability to changing project locations and scopes, with a proactive mindset toward safety planning and risk mitigation.
Work Environment

This is a field-based role supporting new substation builds and upgrades, including inside electrical work for mission-critical data centers and similar facilities. Current project needs include multiple active sites in Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio, and Missouri, with future projects located across the United States. Projects typically run 8 to 9 months in duration, and you can expect to work six days per week while on site. There is no fixed rotation schedule for travel home during projects, but the team works with you to arrange periodic trips home when feasible. The work environment is primarily outdoors and in active construction and electrical substation settings, often adjacent to or integrated with high-reliability data center infrastructure. You will regularly use tablets, laptops, and other IT tools to perform reporting and documentation. Travel is a core component of the role, and project locations will change over time as new substations and upgrades commence. A monthly truck stipend and per diem based on GSA guidelines are provided to support travel-based work. Dress code is typical for industrial and construction environments, with appropriate safety and protective gear required on site.
