Job summary

GCC is seeking a staff Safety Specialist located in Tijeras, NM, near Albuquerque, to lead the safety program and minimize regulatory violations.

The role reports to the Safety Director with a dotted line to the Plant Manager, focusing on developing procedures, training staff, and strengthening the site's safety culture. Minimal travel is anticipated.

The position requires MSHA experience, a Bachelor's degree, and strong communication skills to engage all levels of employees.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 3 years MSHA experience strongly desired.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret regulations and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret regulations and guide development of safety programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Motivate teams to implement safety programs across all levels of the organization.
  • Administer and manage compliance with the safety program and coach field verification to reduce exposure.
  • Deliver safety orientations, monthly safety meetings, and annual safety updates to employees and management.
  • Monitor adherence to safety policies and report discrepancies to management.
  • Coordinate communication of safety information and collaborate to set goals and metrics across the organization.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts in safety performance and support safety guideline implementation.
  • Interact with the workforce daily to provide safety expertise.

This position will be located in Tijeras, NM, 15 minutes from Albuquerque.

What you will do:

Position reports directly to the Safety Director, with a strong dotted line to the Plant Manager. To serve as the staff specialist in safety by carrying out procedures with the line organization that effectively control accident and health exposures in the company and minimize regulatory violations. Responsible for providing guidance, awareness and solutions to ensure safe and reliable operations while acting as a change leader, educator, advocate, consultant and mentor for their location’s safety culture. Strong organizational and communication skills as well as the ability to multitask are a must. Interacts with the workforce in the field on a daily basis, building relationships and providing safety expertise.

Experience and abilities you will need:

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university preferred and at least 5 years related experience managing the safety program for an organization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 3 years MSHA experience strongly desired.
  • Certified training for dust/silica & noise sampling strongly desired.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, procedure manuals, and training presentations.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to effectively develop presentations, deliver the information, and respond to questions from all levels of employees — executives through the hourly workforce, including, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to focus on details and understand the overall impact of events and decisions.
  • Travel Requirements
  • Very little travel is anticipated; however, there may be times when travel to one of the other plants is required based on organizational needs.

Annual Compensation Range = $105,000 to $125,000

Very little travel is anticipated; however, there may be times when travel to one of the other plants is required based on organizational needs.

Main Responsibilities

  • Support internal customers by serving as subject matter expert in assigned areas, interpreting regulations and providing guidance in the development of programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Effectively motivate others to enlist needed cooperation in implementing effective safety programs; ability to manage multiple priorities and work with personnel at all organizational levels required.
  • Administer, direct and manage compliance with the safety program, including focus on the performance and coaching of the Field Verification of Critical Controls to reduce Serious Injury & Fatality exposure, as well as local incident prevention efforts.
  • Implement procedures and programs necessary to improve the effectiveness of the safety program.
  • Deliver new hire employee safety orientations and safety training, monthly safety meetings, and annual safety updates to employees, supervisors, and plant management.
  • Monitor adherence to the safety program policies and procedures in the plant and report discrepancies to plant management and safety director.
  • Coordinate communication of safety information.
  • Collaborate with senior management and the safety team to establish and manage goals, metrics, and priorities for safety across the organization.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts in safety performance and support the implementation and maintenance of the safety guidelines.
  • Work with the divisional safety team and all levels of plant management to prevent employee injuries and regulatory violations.
  • Coordinate and participate in plant Safety Committee.
  • Interact with the workforce in the field on a daily basis, building relationships and providing safety expertise.
