Role description
Arcadis seeks a highly skilled and motivated Safety Manager to support the Gateway Hudson Tunnel Project (HTP), a critical component of the Gateway Program in the United States. The project involves constructing a new two‑track rail tunnel beneath the Hudson River and rehabilitating the 113‑year‑old North River Tunnel, which serves over 200,000 daily passengers via Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT.
Role accountabilities
- Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive safety program specific to the heavy civil tunnel project.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations and standards.
- Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify and address potential hazards.
- Collaborate with the Safety Director to develop and deliver safety training programs for all project personnel.
- Ensure that all workers are adequately trained on safety procedures, equipment usage, and emergency response protocols.
- Conduct toolbox talks, safety meetings, and workshops to reinforce safety awareness.
- Assist in the investigation of accidents, incidents, and near‑misses to determine root causes and develop corrective action plans.
- Maintain accurate records of all safety incidents, ensuring timely reporting and analysis.
- Monitor and enforce adherence to safety policies and regulations by all project personnel.
- Work closely with subcontractors to ensure their safety programs align with project requirements.
- Collaborate with regulatory agencies during inspections and audits.
- Develop and implement emergency response plans for various potential scenarios.
- Conduct regular drills and exercises to ensure effective responses to emergencies.
- Communicate safety expectations, updates, and best practices to all project team members.
- Foster open communication channels for reporting safety concerns and suggestions.
- Ensure the availability and proper use of safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Conduct regular inspections of safety equipment to verify functionality and compliance.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in safety processes and procedures.
- Implement initiatives to enhance the overall safety performance of the project.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of safety compliance experience on heavy civil construction projects.
Key Skills and Abilities
- Experience with tunnel boring machines (TBM).
- Possession of OSHA certifications.
- Relevant safety certifications (e.g., CSP, CHST).
Benefits and Compensation

The salary range for this position is $125,000 – $160,000, and actual salaries vary based on experience, education, budget, internal equity, project, and location.
