Job summary

InterMed is seeking a Safety Manager to develop and oversee comprehensive safety and security programs across our Maine campus, ensuring compliance with OSHA, CMS, and local regulations.

You will lead EOC and Life Safety, conduct risk assessments, manage incident investigations, and train staff while fostering a culture of safety.

This role requires a Bachelor's in safety, CSP/CHSP, 5+ years in safety management in healthcare and strong leadership and communication skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, environmental health and safety or related field required.
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) required; equivalent acceptable.
• Minimum of 5 years of safety management experience, preferably in healthcare.

Job description

The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive safety and security programs to ensure a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors across the organization. This role ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, reduces risk, and fosters a culture of safety aligned with healthcare best practices.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Safety Program Management
  • Develop, implement, and maintain organization-wide safety policies and procedures.
  • Lead Environment of Care (EOC) and Life Safety programs.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and hazard analyses across all facilities.
  • Oversee safety rounds and inspections to identify and mitigate risks.
  • Function as chair of the Safety Committee
• Security Program Management
  • Manage and oversee outsourced physical security vendors.
  • Manage and coordinate facility access control system, employee access badging system, and security systems in coordination with outsourced security systems vendor.
• Regulatory Compliance
  • Supports adherence to applicable safety, healthcare, and regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA, CMS, local authorities).
  • Support preparation for and participation in accreditation surveys.
  • Maintain building life safety documentation and reporting required by regulatory agencies.
• Utilize incident reporting system to ensure timely investigation of safety events.
• Conduct root cause analyses (RCA) and implement corrective actions.
• Track, trend, and report safety metrics to leadership.
• Workplace Safety & Injury Prevention
  • Participate in the development of programs to reduce workplace injuries (e.g., safe patient handling, sharps safety, slip/fall prevention)
  • Partner with HR and Occupational Health on workers’ compensation cases
  • Promote ergonomics and staff safety initiatives.
• Lead emergency management planning (e.g., fire safety, disaster response, active threat preparedness)
• Coordinate drills and training exercises.
• Coordinate with departments to review and maintain emergency operations plans and ensure staff readiness.
• Training & Culture
  • Provide safety training and education for staff at all levels.
  • Promote a culture of safety.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and advisor to leadership and departments.
• Overall accountability and management of colleagues
• Regularly assess developmental opportunities for colleagues, coach colleagues to enhance performance, and support colleagues in learning and applying new skills and competencies.
• Coordinate and monitor staffing levels and labor efficiency.
• Approver for colleague payroll biweekly in accordance with payroll department guidelines and schedule.
• Mentors and counsels’ colleagues to include initiating Performance Improvement plans.
• Works with the Compliance and Human Resources teams to assure compliance with State, Federal and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requirements for colleagues.

  • Models behaviors that demonstrate service excellence to colleagues and focus on the patient as the primary customer.
  • Leads Lean Six Sigma initiatives for the department to foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Fosters intra-departmental support and collaboration between all sites.

  • Works in partnership with the clinical teams, practice leadership, and senior leadership teams.
  • Fosters strong working relationships with all levels of the organization to facilitate effective communication and to connect front line colleagues daily priorities to the organization’s strategic goals.

• Strategic Planning and Program Coordination
  • Assess current state of department with relation to existing InterMed goals and plans.
  • Develops proactive plans to ensure InterMed’s positioning as a leader in healthcare in alignment with company KPIs.
  • Monitors budgets to identify potential financial overruns and variances; makes appropriate recommendations to alleviate financial implications.
  • Champions interdepartmental problem solving.
  • Ensures appropriate departmental policy development and adherence.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights under HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) guidelines. Maintain confidentiality related to financial, or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic, or verbal form, which may jeopardize the privacy of patients and/or colleagues. Accesses and uses the minimum necessary patient identifiable information to perform job responsibilities and duties and only for authorized purposes.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, environmental health and safety or related field required.
  • Master’s degree in related field preferred.
• License/Certifications:
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP), or equivalent required
  • Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA codes and standards, and healthcare safety standards
• Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in safety management, preferably in healthcare
  • Experience with regulatory compliance and accreditation processes preferred
  • Knowledge of healthcare safety, and regulatory standards
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills (incident investigation, RCA)
  • Excellent communication and training abilities

The estimated compensation range is the budgeted amount for this position. Final offers are based on various factors, including skill set, experience, location, qualifications, and other job-related reasons. Certain positions may be eligible for incentive compensation plans above and beyond base compensation.
