Job summary

The Safety Manager at Hensel Phelps will support the senior safety manager and project team on a designated on-site construction project in El Paso. This safety sensitive role requires coordinating safety and health processes to protect workers and ensure compliance.

You will lead risk assessments, training, and safety program development, manage the safety budget, and communicate with owners, trade partners, and field staff. A 4-year degree is preferred and CHST is suggested.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years of safety experience on commercial construction projects.
• CHST certification is suggested.
• Valid driver's license required.

Responsibilities

• Communicate with owners, carriers, and field staff to coordinate safety programs.
• Attend owner meetings and collaborate with safety representatives.
• Promote safety culture via safety charrettes and CARES committee.
• Support safety start-up, program development, and on-site management.
• Help create and manage the project safety budget.
• Ensure necessary safety supplies are on hand.
• Maintain safety documentation and point files.
• Track project safety metrics and trends.
• Assist with activity hazard analyses and inspections.

Job Description

The Safety Manager is responsible for supporting the senior safety manager and project team in the successful completion of a construction project. This position assists the project team in managing safety and health processes on a project. This is a safety sensitive position.

Key Responsibilities

• Effectively communicate with various stakeholders including project owners, insurance carriers, Hensel Phelps staff, craft and trade partners
• Attend owner meetings and work with their safety representatives, as necessary
• Enhance safety culture through participation in executive safety culture charrettes and assisting the CARES (craft safety) committee
• Assist project team with safety start-up, program development, implementation and management
• Work with project team to create and manage the safety budget
• Anticipate necessary safety supplies for employees
• Oversee the safety point file system and documentation
• Maintain project statistical data
• Participate in the six-step quality control/safety process including assisting with activity hazard analyses and participating in follow‑up inspections
• Focus team members on high‑risk activities and work with the area superintendents on ways to control risk
• Conduct project safety training, as needed, and assist in developing the project safety training schedule
• Assist other team members in conducting safety training including tailgate meetings
• Lead the development and implementation of the project's SAFE program
• Analyze project safety trends and work with PS to implement initiatives to address unsafe trends
• Conduct project safety audits and assist in team audits
• Personnel evaluation and development
• Knowledge of construction processes and the roles and responsibilities of all positions.

Qualifications

• A 4-year degree is preferred
• Occupational Safety and Health degree suggested
• Recommended minimum of 3 years of experience in safety on commercial construction projects
• Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) Certification designation is suggested
• Valid Driver’s License
• Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
• Computer software - Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel based templates, Prolog, Primavera and AutoDesk Suite.

Physical Requirements

Moderate Work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

• The individual in this position will periodically walk, kneel, sit, crouch, reach, stoop, read/see, speak, push, pull, lift, stand, and finger/type. The frequency of each action varies by workflow and office activity.
• Walking - The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, boxes, cabinets, etc.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, phone, computer, and computer printer.
• The person in this position frequently communicates with employees and external stakeholders regarding a variety of topics related to office administration.

• Constantly reads written communications and views mail submissions. Will also need to read blueprints and take/verify field measurements.
• Climbing – Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding and ramps at various heights.
• Balancing – Ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling and to walk, stand or crouch.
• Stooping – Bending the body downward and forward by the spine at the waist.
• Visual acuity and ability to operate a vehicle as certified and appropriate.
