Job summary

Thorne is seeking a Safety Lead for the weekend shift (Fri–Sun, 9:00am–9:00pm) at our Summerville, SC site. The role leads safety programs across production, lab, and warehouse areas, drives incident investigations, and delivers training to prevent injuries.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, or related field preferred
• Six+ years of progressive occupational safety or HSE experience in manufacturing, pharma, nutraceutical, food, warehouse, lab, or industrial environment
• Experience conducting inspections, hazard analyses, risk assessments, incidents investigations, and root cause analyses
• OSHA general industry knowledge and safety programs including hazard communication, PPE, LOTO, machine guarding, EOT, fall protection, electrical safety and emergency preparedness
• Experience developing or implementing safety procedures, training, corrective actions, and continuous‑improvement initiatives
• Ability to recognize hazards, evaluate risk, apply hierarchy of controls and propose practical solutions
• CPR/AED/First Aid certification required; OSHA 30/ CSP/ ASP preferred

Responsibilities

• Maintain presence in production, labs, warehouse, and other areas to observe work practices and identify safety concerns
• Conduct inspections, safety observations, job hazard analyses, and risk assessments; recommend controls and verify effectiveness
• Lead or support investigations of injuries, near misses, unsafe conditions; perform root cause analysis and track corrective actions
• Coordinate core safety programs: PPE, lockout/tagout, machine guarding, forklift safety, fall protection, electrical safety, ergonomics
• Develop and deliver safety orientation, regulatory training, toolbox talks, stand‑downs and refresher training
• Coach employees and leaders on safe work practices and regulatory expectations; promote reporting of incidents
• Support OSHA compliance, inspections, permits, records, postings and training documentation
• Assist emergency preparedness activities, drills, evacuation planning, first aid readiness and equipment checks
• Coordinate contractor and visitor safety requirements and monitor on‑site work practices
• Review data to identify trends and recommend prevention activities
• Support safety committees and cross‑functional improvement teams
• Maintain audit‑ready safety records and program documents

The Safety Lead provides hands‑on leadership for the site's occupational safety programs and daily safety activities. This role maintains a visible presence in manufacturing, laboratory, warehouse, and support areas; identifies and helps control workplace hazards; leads incident investigations and corrective actions; delivers safety training and coaching; and partners with employees and leaders to strengthen regulatory compliance and prevent injuries and illnesses.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Maintain a consistent presence in production, laboratory, warehouse, shipping, maintenance, and other work areas to observe work practices, engage employees, and identify safety concerns.
• Conduct routine workplace inspections, safety observations, job hazard analyses, and risk assessments; recommend controls using the hierarchy of controls and verify that corrective actions are completed and effective.
• Lead or support investigations of injuries, illnesses, near misses, unsafe conditions, and property‑damage events; facilitate root cause analysis and track corrective and preventive actions through closure.
• Coordinate and support core safety programs, including hazard communication, personal protective equipment, lockout/tagout, machine guarding, powered industrial trucks, fall protection, electrical safety, ergonomics, contractor safety, and other programs applicable to site operations.
• Develop, deliver, and document safety orientation, required regulatory training, toolbox talks, safety stand‑downs, and refresher training for employees, temporary workers, contractors, and leaders.
• Coach employees and leaders on safe work practices, regulatory expectations, hazard recognition, and timely reporting of incidents and unsafe conditions.
• Support compliance with applicable OSHA requirements and company safety policies, including required inspections, permits, records, postings, and training documentation.
• Support emergency preparedness and response activities, including drills, evacuation planning, first aid readiness, emergency equipment inspections, and follow‑up actions.
• Coordinate contractor and visitor safety requirements, including orientation, review of higher‑risk work, permit expectations, and monitoring of work practices while onsite.
• Review incident, observation, inspection, training, and corrective‑action data to identify trends, communicate performance, and recommend focused prevention activities.
• Support safety committees, employee engagement activities, and cross‑functional improvement teams that strengthen safety ownership.
• Maintain accurate and audit‑ready safety records, program documents, inspection results, training records, risk assessments, and corrective‑action documentation in applicable systems.
• Immediately address or elevate imminent‑danger conditions, repeated unsafe behaviors, overdue high‑risk actions, and other significant safety concerns.
• Provide safety coverage and technical support during emergencies, operational disruptions, regulatory inspections, certification audits, and other significant events.

WHAT YOU NEED

• High school diploma or GED required; bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
• Minimum six years of progressive occupational safety or HSE experience in a manufacturing, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food, warehouse, laboratory, or industrial environment.
• Demonstrated experience conducting workplace inspections, job hazard analyses, risk assessments, incident investigations, and root cause analyses.
• Strong working knowledge of OSHA general industry requirements and common safety programs, including hazard communication, personal protective equipment, lockout/tagout, machine guarding, powered industrial trucks, fall protection, electrical safety, and emergency preparedness.
• Experience developing or implementing safety procedures, training programs, corrective actions, and continuous‑improvement initiatives.
• Ability to recognize hazards, evaluate risk, apply the hierarchy of controls, and recommend practical solutions that protect employees and support operations.
• Ability to lead work and influence others without relying on direct supervisory authority.
• Strong communication, facilitation, presentation, coaching, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with frontline employees and leaders at all levels.
• Demonstrated ability to remain objective during investigations, manage conflict constructively, and communicate significant concerns promptly and professionally.
• Strong organization and follow‑through, including the ability to prioritize multiple assignments, maintain accurate records, and drive corrective actions to closure.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn safety, incident‑management, training, and quality‑management systems.
• Ability to analyze safety data, identify trends, and prepare clear updates and recommendations for operational and executive audiences.
• OSHA 30‑Hour General Industry training, Certified Safety Professional, Associate Safety Professional, or equivalent credential preferred.
• Required to obtain and maintain CPR/AED/First Aid certification.
• Ability to respond to emergencies, work occasional evenings or weekends, and perform duties in production, laboratory, warehouse, and outdoor environments.

Safety Lead Expectations:

In addition to the core responsibilities above, the Safety Lead is expected to:

• Coordinate day‑to‑day safety priorities and provide direction or technical support to HSE team members and operational partners as assigned.
• Model visible, calm, and solutions‑oriented safety leadership and reinforce consistent expectations across shifts and departments.
• Serve as a primary point of contact for routine safety questions and elevate complex, high‑risk, or unresolved issues to HSE management.
• Help standardize safety practices, tools, inspections, training, and documentation across the facility.
• Mentor employees and less‑experienced HSE team members in hazard recognition, investigations, risk assessment, and corrective‑action development.
• Monitor completion and effectiveness of high‑priority safety actions and communicate delays, resource needs, and emerging risks to management.
• Represent Safety on cross‑functional projects, operational meetings, and improvement initiatives when assigned.
