Job summary

Turner Construction Company is seeking an intern to join the safety team in Des Moines, IA, gaining hands-on experience on construction projects and office facilities. You will support safety programs and learn how to implement industry best practices under supervision.

The internship offers exposure to real-world safety challenges, documentation, and collaboration with cross-functional teams, with a focus on professional growth within the construction industry.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a college/university safety, engineering, or related program with at least one year of coursework.
  • Fundamentals of safety and environmental principles; willingness to learn.
  • Desire to learn construction management and industry basics.
  • Flexible to work standard business hours and potential overtime.
  • Strong verbal and written communication; professional demeanor.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with implementing Building L.I.F.E. and safety programs under supervisor guidance.
  • Identify and report safety violations or unsafe practices, prioritizing life safety.
  • Coordinate safety duties for committees, preplanning and toolbox meetings.
  • Support safety training, orientations, and meetings.
  • Review subcontractor safety programs for policy compliance.
  • Promote safe work practices in line with regulations and owner requirements.
  • Assist with drug screening administration and documentation.
  • Support preconstruction meetings and meeting documentation.
  • Help conduct jobsite inspections and develop inspection summaries.
  • Maintain safety records (pre-task plans, JHAs, trainings, OSHA 300 log, MSDS).
  • Assist with worker orientation programs and participation tracking.
  • Perform other duties as assigned under supervision.

Position Description
  • Assist with implementing Building L.I.F.E. (Living Injury Free Everyday) and project safety program while working on construction project or office location and under direction by supervisor.
  • Assist with identifying and reporting safety violations or unsafe practices, with emphasis on situations of imminent danger to life or property.
  • Assist with coordination of safety duties for safety committees, preplanning meetings, and tool box meetings.
  • Assist with coordination of training at safety meetings, tool box meetings, and orientations.
  • Assist with reviewing subcontractor safety programs for completeness and compliance with company policies,
  • Assist with promoting safe work practices and safe working conditions in accordance with company, Federal, State and Local regulations, and owner/contractual requirements.
  • Assist with administration of drug screening program (e.g., pre-employment, post-accident, random, cause) aligned with company and/or client requirements.
  • Assist with preconstruction meetings and conducting research. Document meetings under direction of supervisor.
  • Assist with conducting jobsite and work area inspections and assist with developing inspection summary.
  • Assist with maintaining safety records (e.g., pre-task plans, Job Hazard Analyses, training records, tool box meetings, maintenance of the OSHA 300 log, maintenance of MSDS and chemical inventory sheets, incident investigations and metrics).
  • Assist with conducting effective worker orientation program for new employees and administer and record participation.
  • Other activities, duties, and responsibilities as assigned and under direction of supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Enrolled and actively pursuing college or university accredited degree program in Occupational Safety & Health, Engineering, or related field of study, and minimum of 1 year of completed education, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Basic knowledge of safety and environmental principles and techniques
  • Desire to work in construction management and to learn about construction industry
  • Flexible to work standard business hours and overtime as determined by assignment
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills including student leadership, volunteerism, or other community involvement
  • Professional and clear verbal and written communication skills
  • Assume personal and professional accountability for own actions and activities
  • Proactive, curious, and eager to learn and participate
  • Able to work independently with direction and supervision, and in team environment

  • Able to take direction, learn and process information quickly, and follow tasks through to completion

  • Limited travel may be required, access to reliable transportation required

The employee occasionally performs work on-site at construction work sites, office locations, and/or off-site venues. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
