Job summary

Covia is seeking a Safety & Health Supervisor to lead the Operations safety program at multiple Illinois Valley sites including Troy Grove Grinding and Resin facilities. The role focuses on managing safety rules, regulatory compliance, and safety training to protect employees.

The successful candidate will develop and implement health and safety systems, perform plant inspections, coordinate training, and maintain critical safety records and reporting to ensure a safe work environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3–5 years of Occupational Safety & Health experience, with mining or mineral processing context preferred.
  • Experience with MSHA, OSHA, and site-specific safety regulations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety software (e.g., Cority).

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to and enforce Covia safety rules and government regulations (MSHA, ODM, OSHA).
  • Develop, implement, and manage the sites health and safety system to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Lead safety training, conduct inspections, and maintain records (MSHA forms).
  • Maintain Safety Equipment and Contractor Safety Program; coordinate audits and risk assessments.
  • Investigate incidents and prepare reports; drive continuous improvement in safety performance.

Covia’s looking for a dynamicSafety & Health Supervisor who will have a positive impact on the Operations team at Multiple Location in the Illinois Valley including Troy Grove Grinding, Troy Grove Resin and Wedron Resin. The Safety & Health Supervisor will supervise and administer the Safety & Health Programs in a manner consistent with Corporate and governmental standards.

The successful candidate will have the following Key Accountabilities:
  • Adhere to, comply with and manage all safety rules and regulations within Covia, MSHA, ODM, OSHA and other site specific requirements.
  • Develop, facilitate, implement, train and manage the sites entire health and safety system which will meet or exceed all aforementioned regulatory requirements.
  • Learn Covia Corporate Safety & Health Policies and Procedures.
  • Develop, facilitate, implement, Thompson Site Specific Safety Policy.
  • Inspect the plant monthly and submit a written report to the sites leadership.
  • Develop and maintain a regular area inspection program and Behavior Based Safety (BBS) observation system that involves all employees at the plant.
  • Maintain and direct an active safety training program, including MSHA Training and Monthly Safety Meetings.
  • Prepare and maintain a record of all employees’ safety training including MSHA Form 46.5 (Certificate of Training) New Hire Training
  • Prepare and maintain a record of all employees Annual Refresher safety training including MSHA Form 46.8 (Certificate of Training).
  • Maintain and update monthly a prioritized list of safety items requiring attention from data gathered from plant inspections, safety meetings, shift reports, and MSHA inspections.
  • Schedule and coordinate annual audiograms, physicals for all site employees.
  • Accompany all Health & Safety inspectors during onsite inspections.
  • Perform and monitor respirable dust surveys for all employees and work areas.
  • Perform and monitor noise exposure surveys for all employees and work areas.
  • Direct the plants' Hearing Conservation Programs.
  • Investigate and prepare reports of accidents/injuries that occur on plant property, including employee personal injury, property damage, and near-miss accidents.
  • Monitor and restock supplies in plant first-aid centers.
  • Lead and Facilitate the Personal Protective Equipment Program
  • Maintain all Safety and Health Equipment
  • Maintain Thompson’s Contractor Safety Program
  • Monitor the fire extinguisher program to ensure appropriate and adequate equipment is installed and maintained in work areas and mobile equipment.
  • Maintain required reporting schedule of Safety & Health data in Cority.
  • Prepare and submit the MSHA quarterly report.
  • Prepare and submit (in the time frame allowed - 10 days) the MSHA Form 7000-1 (Accident, Injury, and Illness Report) when a reportable accident occurs.
  • Prepare and maintain all records and data connected with Worker's Compensation issues and communicate as required with insurance carriers, governmental agencies, and Covia management.
  • Develop and maintain communications with local medical facilities/clinics regarding restricted duty work programs available to employees injured on the job.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of all applicable OSHA, MSHA and Covia safety and health policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Administer the employee physical program for pre-employment and periodic employee physicals as per plant policy to include arranging a service provider, scheduling the activity, gathering information and maintaining records, and communicating results with the employee concerned and other parties as appropriate.
  • Act as secretary, facilitator and salaried representative of the plant safety committee and schedule regular meetings.
  • Prepare and facilitate quarterly Helmet Cam Studies.
  • Prepare and facilitate quarterly Ergonomic Projects.
The successful candidate will have the following Minimum Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years of Occupational Safety & Health experience required; additional Safety & Health experience in Mine and Mineral Processing preferred
  • Experience with nonmetallic mining air and water permits
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, SharePoint
