Job description

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world’s most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World’s Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

The Waymo Safety team works to promote and help to continuously improve the safety of Waymo’s fully autonomous driving technology. Our experts develop safety goals and strategies, and conduct safety engineering analyses to ensure safety is being considered throughout the design and development of our vehicles. The team develops and promotes safety strategies and policies for autonomous vehicles for its work with regulatory authorities, lawmakers, law enforcement and public and non-profit organizations. Our Safety Team also helps advise on compliance with applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations.

In this hybrid role, you will report to the Head of Safety Management.

You will:
  • Bespoke Documentation Management: Tailor, specialize, and draft safety documentation required for bespoke regulatory submissions and permits across both domestic and international markets.
  • Cross-Functional Coordination: Act as a critical coordinator between legal, product, and engineering teams, ensuring that specific, ad hoc requests for evidence from regulatory agencies are generated and delivered effectively.
  • Market Prioritization: Manage multiple international and domestic markets simultaneously, effectively navigating ambiguity to prioritize conflicting demands from various regulatory bodies.
  • Content Consolidation: Synthesize complex technical information and consolidate Waymo’s internal stances to ensure a unified voice in all external safety documentation, aligning with the overarching Safety Case.
  • Ad-Hoc Evidence Generation: Partner with subject matter experts in engineering to translate bespoke agency requests into actionable technical documentation tasks, ensuring evidence meets the required regulatory rigor.
  • Process Improvement: Develop tracking systems and operationalize documentation management processes to improve Waymo’s efficiency and maturity in handling diverse compliance and permit requirements.
You have:
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience in regulatory compliance, technical safety documentation, or permit management within a highly technical or safety-critical industry.
  • Minimum 3+ years of experience in research and development of engineering safety practices (any field, but transportation preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage ambiguity in prioritization and successfully coordinate across multiple international markets simultaneously.
  • Proven track record of strong collaboration with legal, product, and engineering teams to generate bespoke technical evidence for external agencies.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to distill complex engineering concepts into clear, compliant documentation suitable for regulators.
  • Experience drafting, contributing to, or maintaining official safety-related documentation (e.g., Safety Cases, homologation files, or type approval submissions).
  • Exceptional project management skills to track ad hoc requests, oversee documentation workflows, and meet strict regulatory deadlines.
We prefer:
  • Direct experience with Automated Driving Systems (ADS) regulations and permit processes.
  • Familiarity with international automotive type approval and homologation requirements (e.g., UNECE regulations).
  • Prior experience validating and structuring documentation for Safety Management Systems (SMS).
  • Familiarity with Waymo’s approach to safety and its overall safety case.
