Job summary

Sierra Pacific Industries in Eugene, Oregon is seeking a Safety Coordinator to partner with the Plant Manager, Safety Director and frontline supervisors to raise safety performance and eliminate hazards.

You will lead injury prevention, regulatory compliance, and safety program design; investigate incidents with root-cause analysis; train crews in lockout/tagout and emergency procedures; and help manage Workers' Comp costs while promoting a safe, compliant workplace.

Qualifications

  • At least 2 years' lead or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and Hazardous Materials regulations
  • Ability to work independently, analyze problems, and make decisions with minimal management intervention
  • Ability to establish credibility and be decisive, while recognizing and supporting Company goals and priorities
  • Proven commitment to safety and Company policy
  • Demonstrated skill in leadership, communication, motivation, and people management
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities under demanding circumstances
  • Analytical reasoning and problem-solving capabilities
  • Understand machinery operations with sufficient knowledge to address safety considerations
  • Experience in managing injury/accident claims, claims analysis, and resulting cost reduction is helpful
  • Solid working knowledge of Word and Excel, and ability to learn various PC based reporting system applications
  • Flexibility in work schedule to effectively interact with multiple crews and shifts, availability to respond to emergencies 24/7

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Plant Manager, Company Safety Director, Superintendent and Supervisors to achieve company-wide safety goals
  • Drive safety excellence, promote crew involvement and accountability, and proactively eliminate hazards
  • Lead by example, assure safe workplace practices are followed, and promote safety awareness
  • Manage health and safety programs, accident and injury prevention, and regulatory compliance
  • Lead efforts to identify, recommend, develop, and implement best practices for safety programs
  • Implement, maintain, and improve safety programs and processes that educate, engage, and motivate crew members at all levels
  • Design and direct programs and procedures to reduce accidents, occupational illnesses, and exposure to health hazards
  • Investigate circumstances of claimed injuries/illnesses objectively, and minimize Workers Compensation costs and fraud
  • Investigate and analyze accidents, potential accident situations, and property damage, with complete documentation and root cause analysis and recommend future preventative and corrective measures
  • Conduct safety analysis of equipment and machinery, develop and implement appropriate process changes
  • Maintain relationships with regulatory and government agency personnel, as well as various industry groups
  • Act as Company representative in cases of government agency inspections concerning safety issues
  • Audit programs and processes for compliance with company standards and government regulations
  • Train managers, supervisors, and crew on safety programs such as lockout/tagout, confined space entry, emergency evacuations, and ensure such programs and training are properly documented
  • Maintain an understanding of, and ensure compliance with, current Federal, State, Local, and Company regulations and policy

We are seeking a qualified Safety Coordinator to work collaboratively with our sawmill in Eugene, Oregon.

About the Position
