Job summary

SSAB in Saint Paul, MN is seeking a St. Paul Safety Coordinator to manage and improve safety programs across the site. You will lead audits, train staff, and ensure regulatory compliance while coordinating with the Operations Manager and Safety Director.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Implement safety management systems that meet or exceed compliance and create value-added enhancements to plant operations.
• Provide leadership, guidance, and training to Operations Personnel in company safety requirements.
• Interface professionally with employees, customers, medical providers, auditors, government officials, and the public in health and safety areas.
• Coordinate and conduct routine plant audits and physical inspections.
• Maintain, upgrade, and implement safety programs with continuous improvement and employee engagement as main objectives.
• Maintain standardized tools to monitor success of safety management systems.
• Investigate incidents, perform root-cause analysis, propose and verify effectiveness of corrective actions, and investigate safety inquiries/suggestions/complaints.
• Plan and coordinate comprehensive safety training as directed.
• Evaluate PPE and procurement; maintain records per SSAB Safety Policy.
• Manage facility’s environmental program with support from Environmental Director.

POSITION PURPOSE

The St. Paul Safety Coordinator will manage, support, coordinate, and verify facility programs related to safety. This includes maintaining facility compliance with applicable laws and regulations through internal and external audits as well as assisting in the continued development and implementation of safety best practices under direction of the Operations Manager and Safety Director. There will also be a limited role in maintaining Environmental compliance by interfacing with Environmental Manager(s).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Implement safety management systems that meet or exceed compliance and create value-added enhancement to plant operations.
• Provide leadership, guidance, and training to Operations Personnel in company safety requirements.
• Interface professionally with employees, customers, medical providers, auditors, government officials, and the public in areas relating to health and safety.
• Coordinate and conduct routine plant audits and physical inspections.
• Maintain, upgrade, and implement safety programs with continuous improvement and employee engagement as main objectives.

• Evaluate, specify, purchase, and audit proper application of PPE.
• Maintain appropriate records in accordance with SSAB Safety Policy.
• Manage facility’s environmental program and compliance with support from Environmental Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and comparable computer/online software.
• Minimum 2 years of full-time safety compliance work (or further education beyond requirements in relevant EHS fields including BS, MS, etc.).
• OSHA 10 Certification and experience with industrial hygiene.
• Exceptional situational awareness and analytical capability.
• Strong project management, record administration, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred:

• OSHA 30 Certification
• Experience in industrial manufacturing processes and working environments.
• Familiarity conducting investigations, audits, and inspections.
• Familiarity with Safety and Environmental Management Systems.

EDUCATION

Required:

• Associate’s degree in: Safety, Environmental, Human Sciences, Business Administration or equivalent work experience (3+ years in a relevant, full-time safety role).

Preferred:

• Previous experience running a comprehensive safety program in an industrial facility.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES / DIRECT REPORTS

• This position does not have any direct reports.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee will sometimes work in the following conditions (in addition to an indoor/office setting):

• In extreme heat and cold; in wet and humid conditions; amid dust, dirt, and noise
• Within confined spaces and at elevated heights.
• While wearing safety equipment and clothing for protection from hazards.

THE EMPLOYEE WILL FREQUENTLY BE REQUIRED TO

• Twist at waist level, reach above/below shoulder and waist level.
• Handle, grip, hold, and grasp with both hands (together and separately).

POSITION TYPE – WORK HOURS - TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Position is full-time, exempt, with limited travel at an expected 10% of time in the field or at other SSAB locations.
