Job summary

Smurfit Westrock is seeking a Safety Associate who will be responsible for supporting environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs. This role ensures compliance with industry standards while assisting in inventory control activities.

You'll promote a safe work environment, investigate accidents, and help implement the safety annual strategy for zero injuries. The ideal candidate will have warehouse experience, strong communication skills, and a firm grasp of safety procedures.

Job description

The Opportunity:

The Safety Associate is responsible for supporting and continuously improving environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs to ensure compliance with legislative, corporate, and industry standards. Partnering with the Multi-Site Safety Manager, this role promotes a safe work environment while supporting operational excellence. In addition, the position assists with inventory control activities, including cycle counts, inventory accuracy, discrepancy research, and verification of inbound deliveries and BOLs.

How you will impact Smurfit Westrock Packaging Solutions:
  • Supports the implementation of the Smurfit Westrock Packaging Solutions Annual Safety and Health Strategy to achieve a Zero Injury Culture.
  • Assists Multi Site Safety Manager with investigation of accidents and injuries and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture focused on incident prevention and regulatory compliance.
  • Partner with Multi-Site Safety manager to develop site specific safety objectives and create action plans to meet those objectives.
  • Assists with internal EHS self‑assessments and weekly audits to ensure compliance.
  • Assists Multi‑Site Safety Manager to ensure all key EHS operational controls are in place and EHS action items are resolved on a timely basis.
  • Ensure DOT and Forklift training/safety procedures for regulatory compliance in partnership with site operations leaders and Fleet Safety.
  • Conduct daily walkthroughs and monthly safety meetings
  • Maintain, review and report on EHS performance, identifying opportunities for improvement along with implementing preventative and corrective actions as required.
  • Perform cycle counts quarterly or as needed on all inventory.
  • Research discrepancies
  • Perform basic math functions.
  • Ensure materials are stored properly to conserve space in compliance with safety procedures.
  • Oversee the rotations of inventories within the warehouse as needed.
  • Keep the solution center accessible for branch staff and visitors additional functions/job duties.
  • Unpacks and examines incoming shipments, reject damaged items, records shortages, and correspond with shippers to rectify damages and shortages.
  • Select appropriate carriers/truckers to fill needs, both domestic and international, and complete necessary shipping documentation.
  • Track shipments as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
What You Need to Succeed:
  • Preferred experience in a warehouse, distribution, or manufacturing environment.
  • Attention to detail and capability to analyze data and make sound conclusions.
  • Strong aptitude for organization, prioritization and managing multiple tasks at the same time.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal and able to conduct Monthly Safety Training meetings with all shifts as required.
  • Occasional travel
Physical Requirements
  • Position requires regular keyboarding, sitting, standing, and walking. Work is performed in both an office environment and warehouse floor incumbent may be exposed to environmental noises and hazards.
  • Use of proper personal protection equipment is required depending on the location and potential hazards including safety shoes, safety vest, bump cap, gloves, hearing protection, safety glasses, and respiratory protection.
