Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Operate construction equipment and motorized vehicles to support utilities, excavation, and maintenance.
  • Perform manual labor for landscape and general maintenance tasks.
  • Report unsafe conditions or damage promptly.
  • Be available for 24‑hour call‑intendency, especially during snow events.
  • Work shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet seasonal demands.
  • Work in extreme weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Possibly be exposed to sewage, dead animals, bees, and pollen.
  • Be covered by the UAW Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Operate a wide variety of construction equipment and motorized wheeled vehicles including commercial trucks and tractors over 25,000 lbs. to provide utilities, general excavation, and construction maintenance support
  • Perform manual labor for general maintenance and landscape construction tasks, including shoveling, paving, catch basin minor repairs, cleaning, tamping, snow removal, and other duties that apply
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions or damage to campus landscape/hardscape, equipment, or facilities
  • Be available for 24‑hour call‑intendency to handle emergencies, especially snow events
  • Work shift changes and extended working hours (including nights, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays) to meet seasonal work demands
  • Work in weather conditions of extreme heat and cold for extended periods
  • Possibly come into contact with sewage and dead animals, and have regular exposure to bees and pollen
  • Have this position covered by the UAW Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • After probationary period, employees will be required to pay union dues per Article 1 of the agreement
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years of experience in the construction field, including a minimum of one year of experience working around underground utilities and operating motorized construction and snowplow equipment
  • Must have and maintain a valid U.S. driver’s license; may be required to operate a motor vehicle (own or Cornell‑owned) to travel to/from job sites
  • CDL license required or must obtain within 6 months of hire. Must maintain a current DOT physical, pass a pre‑employment drug test and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in Construction Technology desirable
  • Formal training in construction technologies, building trades or equipment operation, helpful
  • Current CDL license preferred
