Job summary

The University of Minnesota is seeking a full-time research assistant to support projects in the Department of Pharmacology. Under supervision of the PI or senior lab member, you will contribute to studies on neural and behavioral processes related to drug addiction and relapse, including metformin interactions.

You will maintain records in notebooks and databases, review literature, and assist with maintaining lab supplies and equipment, plus SOP documentation and meetings.

Qualifications

  • BS in neuroscience or related field with 4+ years in a preclinical lab.
  • Willingness and ability to work with rodents (rats and mice).
  • Strong motivation and eagerness to learn.

Responsibilities

About the Job

This is a research role. Work will be performed under the supervision of the PI and/or a senior laboratory member.

80% The applicant will assist in executing a research project and/or provide assistance for ongoing research projects related to the neural and behavioral processes underlying drug addiction and relapse, cocaine and metformin interactions, and metformin mechanism of action.

20% The applicant will assist in maintaining detailed records of all experiments and procedures in lab notebooks as well as in online databases and project management tools. The applicant is expected to review relevant scientific literature and summarize findings periodically in meetings or in writing.

Other tasks include maintenance and inventory of common supplies for the laboratory, maintaining equipment in working order, sterilizing supplies as needed, keeping records of protocols and standard operating procedures.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications

A BS in neuroscience or a related field with experience working in a preclinical research laboratory OR a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least four years. Individuals must be willing and able to handle/work with rodents including rats and mice. Individuals must be highly motivated and demonstrate a desire to learn.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with basic molecular and wet laboratory techniques. Strong organizational and communications skills. The ability to work independently and in a group setting. Experience with computers and programming.

The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Minnesota is one of six basic science departments in the Medical School. The well-funded research programs of our primary faculty members focus on understanding and developing better treatments for cancer, addiction and the opioid crisis, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, and metabolic syndrome.
