Job summary

Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals, Inc. is seeking a Registered Respiratory Therapist to administer respiratory therapies to patients and ensure compliance with quality care standards. Job description

Registered Respiratory Therapist

The Registered Respiratory Therapist administers respiratory therapy procedures to examine, diagnose, and treat patients with respiratory and pulmonary disorders. The Respiratory Therapist assesses patient condition, consults with physicians to determine appropriate treatment plans, and monitors patient progress following procedures to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. The Respiratory Therapist also documents all patient care activities and ensures they comply with the appropriate quality of care standards and regulations of the department.

Responsibilities

1. Interact with co‑workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
2. Administer physician‑prescribed respiratory therapy, including oxygen, respiratory medication, PFTs, ABGs, and all mechanical ventilation.
3. Perform evaluation procedures, both invasive and non‑invasive, to determine respiratory care needs, and make appropriate recommendations based upon department protocols, ultimately improving patient outcomes and facilitating patient discharge.
4. Monitor patients requiring mechanical ventilation, including clinical assessment, routine rounds, troubleshooting, weaning, airway care, and diagnostic testing to ensure safety and appropriate care.
5. Collect and analyze sputum, blood, and breath specimens for diagnosis; measure the patient’s lung capacity to determine any impairments.
6. Offer diagnostic results and treatment suggestions based on the analysis of the patient.
7. Communicate with other health care team members to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services.
8. Assure smooth operation of the PFT and ABG laboratory, or perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or manager.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Professional competency in the science of Respiratory Care commensurate with the NBRC credential.

Required Experience, Education, Certification(s), License(s)

• Graduate of an AMA approved School of Respiratory Care.
• Licensed by the State Board of Medicine or State Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
• Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).
• Associate’s/2‑year degree required.
• Registered by the National Board of Respiratory Care (if not registered, must obtain NBRC registration within 2 years of hire).

Preferred Experience, Education, Degree, Certification(s), License(s)

• ACLS and/or NALS preferred.
• Prior experience preferred.
