Job summary

YSS in Des Moines is seeking a Rooftop Gardens Coordinator to lead daily operations of our rooftop gardens, oversee hydroponic and greenhouse growing, and support a six-month workforce development program for young adults.

You’ll mentor participants aged 18–24, coordinate curriculum-based learning, maintain program records, build community partnerships, and help attract a diverse cohort while ensuring program compliance and impact.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or related field is required.
• Hands-on experience with irrigation, electrical, mechanical systems or related equipment.
• Basic computer proficiency (Windows, Word, Excel).
• Working knowledge of food safety regulations and practices.
• Travel, including transporting participants, is required; for YSS insurance purposes you must be 21+, have a valid state-issued driver’s license, and maintain a clean driving record.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily maintenance, growing, harvesting, and operation of hydroponic and greenhouse systems.
• Supervise, mentor, and support young adults throughout a six-month workforce development program focused on job readiness, financial literacy, and housing stability.
• Facilitate curriculum-based learning and create a safe, supportive environment for Participants to learn and contribute.
• Maintain accurate records, track program data, complete required reporting, and ensure compliance with funding and organizational requirements.
• Develop relationships with local businesses and community organizations to strengthen the program and create opportunities for Participants.
• Support outreach, marketing, and recruitment efforts to attract strong and diverse groups of Participants.
• Coordinate and participate in special events, community activities, and internal meetings that highlight the program and its impact.
