Description

Join Amazon's Robotics Delivery & Packaging Innovations (RDPI) Technology Deployment team within Amazon Robotics (AR) to deploy innovative industrial robotics across North America's fulfillment network. In RDPI, we deploy leading edge industrial robotics and customer fulfillment technologies across the North America Stores operations, acting as the field team that plans, executes, and launches technologies developed by RDPI with internal design and product strategy partners.

As a Systems Engineer in RDPI, you will oversee large scale project planning, installation, and launch of industrial automation technologies across Amazon’s growing Stores network. This field engineering role requires strong technical skills for deploying robotic equipment, including mechanical and electrical systems, network configurations, and software coordination. The ideal candidate has experience with complex electro-mechanical and network systems, large-scale installations, and system troubleshooting. You will work with cross-functional partners across Amazon Fulfillment Technology & Robotics engineering, safety, product strategy, software, supply chain, third-party installers, contracted deployment engineers, construction teams, and internal operations customer teams, serving as the lead on-site project manager to provide technical oversight on on-site installation of Amazon-designed automation equipment. This is an individual contributor role focused on planning through go-live of each project. Project durations vary from a few days to several months. This is a travel-based role with expected travel to meet project requirements across North America, up to 75% or more.

Relocation to Amazon Corporate offices in Seattle, Boston, or Austin will be required for the role.

Key job responsibilities
  • You will manage the tactical deployment of large-scale industrial automation technologies, ranging in technical complexity and product maturity from early alpha/beta to mature Generally Available.
  • You will own the tactical execution (onsite coordination of installation and acceptance testing) to achieve the target “go-live” date for each project assigned; delivering independently.
  • You will collaborate with hardware engineering, technical program managers, product managers, and internal customers including site maintenance and operations teams to convert technical requirements into refined deployment execution documents (schedules, Standard Operating Procedures, dependencies, etc.).
  • You will improve operational metrics and team processes through automation and optimization.
  • You will independently resolve difficult technical problems during deployment, considering operational burden and making appropriate trade-offs between time, quality, and resources.
  • You will create and improve standard work documents and operational guidebooks, and work towards automating or improving team processes.
  • You will influence internal and partner teams towards meeting team level goals.
  • You will develop subject matter expertise in one or more deployment domains.
  • You will mentor junior engineers and participate in technical assessment.
  • You will drive operational excellence initiatives with measurable results.
A day in the life

In this role you will focus on execution of end-to-end deployment and manage technical ambiguity around integration of workcells in fulfillment centers. Daily you will collaborate with hardware engineering, technical program managers, product managers, construction teams, and internal customers including site maintenance and operations teams to ensure a safe, on-time, high-quality product is delivered to the internal customer. You will travel to project sites, collaborate both virtually and in person, to ensure all business stakeholders are aligned on program status. You will manage day-to-day project execution and work on continuous improvement activities to improve deployment first-pass yield. You will work with senior engineers and your manager to develop technical depth and strategic thinking for future growth.

RDPI Tech Deployment is missioned with enabling the delivery of large-scale automation technologies designed and manufactured by Amazon. The team is multi-disciplinary, including Field Deployment Engineers, Controls Engineering, Design for Deployment, Product Single Threaded Leaders, and a Program Management Office. We collaborate to enable delivery of new technologies and packaging solutions that improve safety, quality, and costs within Amazon fulfillment processes. The team is geographically located across four North America hub locations and the work supports high-priority goals for senior leadership at Amazon.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • 2+ years of Linux systems administration and/or development experience
  • 1+ years of experience in at least two of these languages: Python, Java, Perl, PHP, Ruby, or Bash/Shell
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or other technical field or related experience
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals
  • Experience in a 24/7 production environment
  • Experience in Linux systems administration and/or development
  • 1+ years of experience with technical drawings and/or reading CAD models (mechanical and electrical)
  • 1+ years of experience working on mechanical, electrical, IT networked, or software systems
  • Understanding of data collection and reporting processes; ability to make data-driven decisions
  • Ability to troubleshoot robotics systems to resolve escalations including quality hand-off, live order testing, site acceptance testing, operational readiness testing, and monitoring system performance
  • Ability to read and develop technical documentation and process instructions
  • Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to work primarily in construction or warehouse environments in a field-based role and travel extensively across the US and potentially internationally
  • Proficiency in standard office software tools

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of site reliability engineering (SRE), systems engineering, systems administration, DevOps, security administration, or network administration experience
  • 1+ years building scripts, tooling, and automation for large-scale computing environments
  • Knowledge of configuration management systems (Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or related)
  • Experience in network capture and systems troubleshooting
  • Experience building scripts, tooling, and automation for large-scale computing environments
  • 1+ years experience with machine Overall Equipment Effectiveness and KPI metrics tools (such as Tableau)
  • Excellent business communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders up to leadership two levels above
  • Experience in industrial systems engineering, including conveyance and industrial robotics
  • Experience in building Capital Appropriation Requests for projects exceeding $10M

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
