Job summary

Forvia in Toledo, Ohio, is seeking a Robotic Welding Engineer to drive productivity, quality and safety across the facility. You will support existing operations and new product launches, coordinating equipment improvements, line balancing, and capital projects.

You will lead troubleshooting of PLC/robot systems, develop standards for repair and spare parts, mentor technicians, and contribute to cost reduction and process improvements while ensuring compliance with HSE requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent; or 10 years as a process technician with commitment to further education.
  • Strong PLC and robotics troubleshooting skills; experience with ladder logic and HMI development.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate equipment improvements to meet manufacturing, maintainability and HSE requirements for robots and other equipment.
  • Plan development aspects of customer and facility projects to support new launches and continuous improvement.
  • Minimize downtime and improve TRS through proactive maintenance and problem solving.
  • Develop standards for repair, spare parts inventory, setup, and operations for equipment.
  • Support production teams in continuous improvement activities and cost reduction efforts.
  • Lead product launches and engineering change processes, including equipment procurement and line balancing.
  • Coach technicians on troubleshooting, robot setup, process control validation, and proper gauging methods.

Your mission, roles and responsibilities

The primary purpose of the Robotic Welding Engineer is to drive and support productivity, quality, cost improvement, and safety goals established for the facility. They will be responsible for supporting existing business as well as new product launches.

  • Coordinate equipment improvements to assure manufacturing, maintainability and HSE requirements are met on all technical equipment including robots
  • Plan all development aspects of customer and facility related projects
  • Contribute to minimizing down time and improve TRS
  • Facilitate project integrity and success against identified agreed goals
  • Identify and develop standards for equipment repair, spare parts inventory, set up, and operations
  • Facilitate and support production teams in continuous improvement activities
  • Develop and implement projects targeted on cost reductions, safety, ergonomics, change-over, standardization, productivity, and product quality improvements
  • Facilitate new product launches and engineering change activities. This includes product quotations, equipment and tool purchasing, line manning and balancing, writing of capital appropriations requests, development of quality, and production documentation (process flows, FMEA’s, work instructions, line layouts, BOS charts, budgetary tracking)
  • Coach Process Technicians, GAP Leaders and Manufacturing Associates on process trouble shooting, set-up of robots and equipment, validating correct process control, using proper gauging processes and procedures, and other equipment and process related technical skills needed to safely produce good parts
  • Support QRCI process to take an active role in the identification of root-cause problems and take a leadership role in the implementation of short term containment actions and long term permanent corrective actions

Qualifications
  • Minimum education level: Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, Information Technology or equivalent is preferred OR 10 years as a process technician and commitment to further education
Skills and competencies
  • Knowledge to design and integrate into systems new and existing
  • Ability to troubleshoot
PLC Technologies
  • Create PLC application code using ladder logic, structured text, and ascii
  • Create HMI applications via GUI and scripting
  • Oversee production and implementation of designed systems
  • Responsible for continuous improvement of design process
  • Ability to program and troubleshoot servo control systems
  • Ability to connect and troubleshoot, program new logic
  • Knowledge of servo control systems and devices
Robotic Technologies
  • Ability to setup modify job structure
  • Knowledge of PM procedures and TCP setup
  • Ability to create concurrent sub routines for multi axis cells
  • Ability to troubleshoot and remap I/O
  • Ability to create and troubleshoot ladder logic
  • Build user interface using IF panel builder
  • Have an understanding of FSU & DCS safety systems
  • In depth knowledge of controller electrical systems
  • Basic understanding of speed reducers and harmonic drives
  • Knowledge of welding, material handling, and plasma cutting applications
