Job summary

WSP USA is offering a 12-week Summer Traffic Engineering Internship in Lexington, KY (with Louisville, KY also considered). The role targets undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in Civil Engineering or related programs.

Interns will gain hands-on experience in traffic signal design, roadway lighting, and ITS while working with senior staff. You will receive training on design standards and essential software, participate in project research and field work, and contribute to design

Qualifications

• Actively enrolled in an accredited Civil Engineering or related undergraduate program with anticipated graduation date December 2027 or later.
• Must be 18 or older.
• Demonstrated interest in Traffic Engineering or related field.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences.
• Capable of taking direction from leadership and mentors to execute projects.
• Basic proficiency with technical writing, office software, and design tools.
• Authorized to work in the United States at internship start.

Responsibilities

• Support a variety of engineering tasks to develop technical, social, and ethical skills.
• Learn basic principles of Traffic Engineering.
• Assist with project research, field work, and preliminary design calculations and analysis.
• Support preparation of final design plans, provisions, and cost estimates.

Our Traffic Engineering Teamis seeking a Full-Time Summer Traffic Internto work out of our Lexington, KYoffice.The following locations will also be considered: Louisville, KY. This temporary position is seeking individuals currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate degree program.

This internship will be part of the WSP Summer Internship Program. As a summer intern, you have the opportunity to participate in our 12-week program scheduled to start on May 17th, 2027. The individual start date of the internship may be flexible.

The intern will receive introductory training in civil and traffic engineering principles related to transportation infrastructure, including traffic signal design, roadway lighting design, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The candidate will develop a working knowledge of applicable design standards and will learn to use the required engineering and design software necessary to support these tasks, with learning reinforced through practical application on active projects.

Your Impact

• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Required Qualifications

• Actively enrolled in an accredited Civil Engineering or related, Undergraduate program with an anticipated graduation date of December 2027or later.
• Must be 18 or older.
• Demonstrated interest in Traffic Engineering or related field, and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP’s work and projects.
• Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
• Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to executive projects.
• Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
• Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship.

Preferred Qualifications

• Actively enrolled in an accredited Civil Engineering or related, Masters or PhD program with an anticipated graduation date of December 2027 or later.
• Experience using Open Roads Designer preferred.
• Prior internship and leadership involvement on campus.
