Service Vehicle Operator – Wixom, MI
Join our team as a Service Vehicle Operator and be the hero our AAA members rely on when they need help most. You’ll respond to service calls, assist stranded motorists with services like jump‑starts, tire changes, and lockouts, and safely tow vehicles when needed. The role combines hands‑on problem solving, customer care, and safe driving while working independently on the road.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond to roadside assistance requests from AAA members using a tow truck or service vehicle.
- Provide emergency roadside services including tire changes, fuel delivery, battery testing and installation, jump starts, lockout assistance, and minor mechanical adjustments.
- Safely tow disabled vehicles following established procedures and towing guidelines.
- Verify AAA membership and deliver outstanding customer service during every interaction.
- Complete pre‑trip and post‑trip DOT inspections and report vehicle maintenance concerns.
- Maintain a clean and professional service vehicle.
- Utilize tablets and electronic devices to manage calls, update service requests, and access towing procedures.
- Accurately document daily activities, service calls, vehicle logs, and receipts.
- Maintain DOT certification and an acceptable driving record.
- Achieve goals related to member satisfaction, safety, productivity, and battery services.
- Support community and special AAA events as needed.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid state driver's license with minimal driving infractions/incidents.
- Successful completion of drug screening, motor vehicle record review, criminal background check, and DOT physical examination (pre‑employment and ongoing).
- Strong customer service skills with effective and professional communication.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions in the field.
- Comfortable using GPS, mobile technology, tablets, and electronic applications.
- Ability to lift and move items weighing up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to read and interpret roadside service procedures and member benefits.
- Basic math and record‑keeping skills.
- Successful completion of AAA training programs.
- Commitment to safety and teamwork.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- If employed in Illinois, possession of a valid Illinois C‑NonCDL driver’s license is required.
- Preferred:
- Prior experience providing roadside assistance services such as battery testing, jump starts, lockout assistance, fuel delivery, or tire changes.
- Previous tow truck driving experience.
- Experience operating wheel‑lift, flatbed, or dolly towing equipment.
- Commercial driving experience.
- Automotive knowledge or mechanical aptitude.
Work Environment
This is a highly active, field‑based position providing roadside service directly to AAA members. Employees spend up to 95% of their time outdoors and on the road, working in varying weather conditions and around traffic environments. Less than 5% of tasks are performed in a traditional office setting. Safety is always the top priority and team members receive training and resources to perform their duties successfully.
Compensation & Benefits
- Hourly rates starting at $23.00 per hour (rate may vary by location and experience).
- Overtime opportunities paid at time‑and‑a‑half.
- Shift differentials: 5% premium for hours worked between 5:00PM - 11:00PM; 10% premium for hours worked between 11:00PM - 5:00AM.
- $1,000 Sign‑On Bonus, paid in installments at 90 and 180 days of employment (applicable only to new hires).
