Job summary

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office is seeking experienced deputies as lateral hires. MCOLES (or state equivalent) certified officers can earn up to $40/hour and receive 126 vacation time depending on experience.

Under supervision, performs general duty police work to protect life and property across the county. Duties include enforcing traffic regulations, making arrests, serving papers, and testifying in court when required.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school and M.C.O.L.E.S. licensure required, preferably supplemented by specialized training courses in employee's field of specialty.
• Bachelor's degree preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform general duty police work in protection of life and property throughout the county.
• Patrol assigned areas and enforce traffic regulations, issue tickets.
• Investigate suspicious conditions and possible law violations.
• Make arrests, escort suspects to locations, advise rights, and incarcerate on charges.
• Escort prisoners to court, testify in court proceedings, and assist in prosecution.
• Respond to emergencies, direct traffic, gather evidence, interview witnesses, and prepare reports.
• Record citizen calls and complaints; provide information to the public.
• Watch for, investigate, and recover wanted or missing persons and stolen property.
• Serve civil and criminal process, including warrants and subpoenas.

Education

MCOLES licensure or state equivalent

LATERAL DEPUTIES

The Ottawa County Sheriff's office is hiring experience deputies as lateral hires! MCOLES (or state equivalent) certified officers can earn up to $40/ hour and receive 126 vacation time depending on experience.

Under the supervision of a command officer, performs general duty police work in the protection of life and property throughout the county. Maintains law and order, prevents crime, deals with complaints, and renders emergency assistance to the public as a uniformed officer. Also may serve civil papers. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and standard methods and practices. A degree of independent initiative and judgment must be exercised by the employee under emergency conditions. The work may involve an element of danger.

• Patrols an assigned area of the county in motorized equipment to generally preserve law and order and prevent and discover the commission of crime.
• Enforces traffic regulations and issues tickets.
• Investigates suspicious conditions and possible law violations.
• Makes arrests for violations of laws, escorts suspects to various locations, advises suspects of their rights, and incarcerates suspects on charges.
• Escorts prisoners to court, testifies in court proceedings, and otherwise assists in prosecution.
• At scene of an accident administers emergency assistance, directs and controls traffic, conducts investigation, gathers evidence, interviews witnesses, makes arrests, and prepares a detailed report.
• Records and takes appropriate follow-up action on citizen calls and complaints.
• Provides assistance and information to the public.
• Watches for and investigates wanted and missing persons and stolen property.
• Serves civil and criminal process, including warrants and subpoenas.

Possession of a valid driver's license.

• Ability to swiftly learn law enforcement methods, practices and procedures.
• Ability to gain a good working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws and to attain efficiency in the methods and practices of criminal investigation.
• Ability to carry out instructions and swiftly adopt an effective and sound course of action. Ability to deal fairly and effectively with the public.
• Good powers of observation, sound judgment, and good moral character.
• Excellent physical and mental condition, courage, strength, agility, and ability to withstand stress.
• Proficiency in the use of firearms.
• Ability to pass rigid physical examination and thorough background investigation.
• Must possess excellent verbal communication skills and be capable of adapting to potentially violent or unstable situations.

• Frequent bending and stooping while moving, lifting, pushing, etc. of victims, stretchers, and equipment.
• Climbing stairs, banks, hills, uneven terrain while performing duties. Moving frequently in and out of patrol vehicles.
• Frequent reaching and turning in operating motor vehicle and ability to use radio and attendant equipment in vehicle.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Position frequently works in an outdoor environment with exposure to weather-related heat and cold, rain, wind and varying weather conditions; may occasionally work in an office setting. Work is frequently performed in the community in close proximity to members of the public with possible exposure to a variety of disease agents and to bloodborne pathogens.
