Job summary

FedEx Freight is hiring for a professional tractor-trailer driver in New Jersey. The role involves picking up and delivering trailers between service centers and turn-point locations, with responsibilities including pre-trip inspections, hooking/unhooking trailers, logging hours, and complying with DOT regulations.

The position requires a Class A CDL with hazmat and tank endorsements and a valid MVR. It offers both linehaul and non-linehaul pay structures, with hourly and mileage components, and

Qualifications

• Must possess a class A CDL with double/triple, hazmat and tank endorsements; automatic restriction allowed.
• At least 1 year experience within the last 3 years, or completion of FedEx Freight Driver Development Course.
• MVR acceptable based on hiring standards.
• DOT FMC regulations compliance (Part 391).
• LCV qualification for listed states (AZ, CO, FL, ID, IN, KS, MT, ND, NV, OH, OK, OR, SD, UT).
• Basic written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to lift trailers and equipment up to about 100 pounds repeatedly.
• Ability to sit extended periods and maneuver in/out of trucks.
• Ability to work independently or as a team member.
• Demonstrates initiative and motivation.

Responsibilities

• Operate tractor-trailer including doubles and triples where applicable.
• Perform daily pre-trip and safety inspections.
• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies.
• Verify and complete required documentation and reports.
• Maintain accurate daily logs.
• Comply with hazardous materials regulations and procedures.
• Follow dispatch instructions and communicate delays, arrivals, and problems.
• May perform chaining of vehicle tires.
• May perform city driver or dock duties if needed.
• Load and unload freight as required.
• Comply with laws, regulations and company policies.
• Perform other duties as required.

Starting Rate of Pay: $0.8292 per mile for linehaul duties, $36.01 per hour, for non-linehaul duties

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Pick up and deliver trailers between Service Centers and/or turn-point locations via tractor-trailer combinations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Operate tractor-trailer combination, including doubles (and triples, where applicable).

• Perform daily pre-trip and safety inspections on equipment.

• Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer.

• Verify and complete required documentation and reports.

• Maintain accurate daily logs.

• Comply with hazardous material regulations and procedures.

• Follow dispatch instructions and communicate with dispatch (e.g. delays, arrivals, equipment problems), as required.

• May be required to perform chaining of vehicle tires.

• May be required to perform job duties of a city driver or a dock employee where operationally necessary.

• Load and unload freight as required.

• Comply with all applicable laws/regulations, as well as company policies/procedures.

• Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must possess a class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with double/triple, hazardous materials and tank endorsements.* Automatic transmission CDL restriction allowed.

• Must possess 1 year experience within most recent 3 years, or successful completion of FedEx Freight Driver Development Course.

• Must have acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards.

• Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) regulations.

• Long combination vehicles (LCV) (i.e. Triple Trailers, Rocky Mountain Doubles, and Turnpike Doubles) are operated in the states of AZ, CO, FL, ID, IN, KS, MT, ND, NV, OH, OK, OR, SD and UT. LCV Drivers in these states must meet the Long Combination Vehicles (LCV) Qualification and Certification Minimum Standards.

• Basic written and verbal communication skills (documentation, communication with peers, supervisors, etc.).

• Ability to hook-up and break-down sets of trailers that require an average lift force of about 100 pounds, several times a day or more.

• Ability to sit for extended periods of time, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck.

• Ability to follow instructions and complete required training.

• Ability to work independently and/or as a team member.

• Demonstrates initiative and motivation.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Drive long distances day and night on all types of roads and in all types of weather.

• Exposure to noise and vibration.

• Exposure to dust and diesel fumes.

• Exposure to hazardous materials shipped and packaged under DOT regulations.

• Hours may vary due to operational need.

• Overnight stays may be required for some schedules.

• *The Hazardous Materials endorsement must be obtained within 120 days of offer acceptance. An employee will not be allowed to drive a commercial motor vehicle without this endorsement.

Pay:

Mileage Pay Range: 0.7522 per mile for linehaul duties, plus fixed pay for certain linehaul-related tasks equal to a fraction of the hourly rate (3/4, 1/2, 1/4), not based on time taken; Hourly Pay Range: $32.66 - $32.66 per hour.

This compensation range is a reasonable estimate of the current starting pay range in NJ. If this opportunity includes multiple job levels, the range is a reasonable estimate of the current starting salary for the lowest level to the current starting salary of the highest level. Actual starting pay is determined by experience relative to the job, market level, specific location and other job-related factors permitted by law.

Regular full & part-time employees (who complete 91 days of employment and work a minimum average of 12 hours per week) are eligible to enroll in medical, dental, and/or vision coverage, tuition reimbursement. Full/part-time employees who are age 21 are eligible for 401(k) after one month of employment.
