Job summary

Phelps Health, a Missouri hospital system, seeks a Nursing Shift Manager (NSM) to lead the unit during a shift. The NSM is a registered nurse responsible for safety, quality, and staff coordination to ensure optimal patient care and outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise unit safety and patient care during shifts in accordance with hospital policy and quality goals.
  • Provide nursing care including administration of medications, nursing interventions, and patient/family teaching.
  • Monitor staff compliance with safety, infection prevention, and quality measures; coach and support staff as needed.
  • Communicate patient information to physicians and the care team to improve outcomes and patient experience.
  • Delegate appropriately to maintain teamwork, accountability, and timely care.

General Summary

The Nursing Shift Manager (NSM) is a professional Registered Nurse who assumes management responsibility for the Unit during a shift.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Follows established hospital policy regarding patient safety measures such as infection prevention, safe patient handling and movement, critical lab notification, etc. to ensure that patient care is provided in an optimally safe environment.
  • Monitors staff compliance with safety measures.
  • Coaches/counsels assigned staff members on safety standards.
  • Maintains and cares for central lines and prevents surgical site infections per policy.
  • Provides quality nursing care including administration of medications, nursing intervention, and patient and family teaching.
  • Performs all actions within the guidelines established in hospital policy and procedure to support quality outcomes and patient safety.
  • Monitors staff compliance with all quality measures.
  • Provides support and education to staff regarding quality initiatives, outcomes, and process change.
  • Participates in quality monitoring activities as assigned by the unit director.
  • Participates in process change to achieve quality outcomes communicating support of identified quality goals to all staff members.
  • Performs initial and ongoing assessments in all aspects of patient care to monitor patient status, improve quality, enhance patient safety, and to provide accurate information to health care team members.
  • Reviews and cosigns admission assessment for LPN staff members.
  • Monitors quality of assessments performed by staff and provides constructive feedback as needed to improve performance.
  • Displays critical thinking skills in patient and situation assessment to identify areas that are in need of improvement and intervention.
  • Guides and directs patient care staff in situations to insure that quality outcomes are met and that patients are satisfied with their care experience.
  • Documents accurately and efficiently all patient care activities and required quality monitoring items to support the achievement of compliance with established quality measures.
  • Monitors documentation of staff as assigned to contribute to compliance with quality goals.
  • Completes all required NSM specific paperwork such as daily sheets, staffing logs, etc.
  • Communicates to physicians and appropriate team members pertinent patient information in order to improve patient outcomes and quality care.
  • Communicates to patient and family members in a timely manner that enhances the patient experience and promotes learning to support health care outcomes.
  • Performs service recovery as needed.
  • Follows-up on all patient care concerns in a professional manner.
  • Communicates professionally with nursing and physician staff members to enhance patient care outcomes.
  • Communicates unit needs to the director.
  • Delegates appropriately to team members while maintaining an atmosphere fostering teamwork and accountability.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the dynamics of health care, adapting to change in a positive and professional manner in an attempt to support the hospital mission, vision, and values.
  • Incorporates critical thinking into his/her nursing practice and attempts to develop skills and abilities through continued education and various educational opportunities.
  • Provides professional feedback to staff members in an attempt to improve nursing practice.
Education
  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing preferred.
Work Experience
  • One year of registered nursing experience preferred.
Certification/License
  • Current RN license in the State of Missouri or Compact Licensure.
  • Graduate nurses (GN) must obtain licensure within 90 days of graduation.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support.
Mental/Physical Requirements
  • Considerable mental concentration required.
  • Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required.
  • Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
Working Conditions
  • Frequent exposure to infectious disease and hostile persons at times.
  • Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids.
  • Minimal physical discomfort.
