Job summary

UAB Medicine in Birmingham, AL seeks a registered nurse for the MPIU/HSP6 14-bed unit delivering acute care to psychiatric patients with medical comorbidity. You will apply the nursing process to assess, plan, educate and support patients and families.

Responsibilities include collaborating with physicians and the care team, providing health teaching, and ensuring cost-effective, high-quality care. Alabama RN license, BLS required within 30 days; BSN preferred; ACLS/PALS may be required.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Nursing program is required.
• Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.
• If in a FSED location, 1 year of emergency or ICU nursing experience is required.
• Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as an RN by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
• BLS certification from the AHA is required or must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
• ACLS and/or PALS may be required depending on unit/department.

Job Highlights

The Medical Patient Intervention Unit (MPIU), also known internally as Hospitalist 6 (HSP6), is a 14-bed acute care hospitalist unit. This newer unit provides care for patients suffering from a psychiatric disorder with a concurrent medical condition that requires additional treatment. Nurses work as part of an interdisciplinary team to care for a variety of patients, including: psychiatric patients with varying medical conditions, including uncontrolled diabetes, heart failure, and acute kidney injury; patients suffering from the effects of coexisting severe mental illnesses, including acute psychosis or encephalopathy and toxic ingestions; and, patients with degenerative diseases like Huntington's disease or a traumatic brain injury.

Job Description

To utilize the nursing process to care and/or counsel individuals in the promotion and maintenance of health and the prevention of illness and injury. Using a systematic critical-thinking approach to guide data gathering, assessment, nursing judgment, intervention and evaluation of human responses to actual and potential health problems through activities such as health teaching, health counseling and the provision of care supportive and restorative of life and supportive of a peaceful death. To identify patient needs using the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Synergy Model. To delegate, coordinate and manage all aspects of nursing care provided to the patient, their family and our community in a timely and cost-effective manner. To deliver patient care in collaboration with the patient, their family and all members of the health care team and with the knowledge of a licensed physician, psychologist, podiatrist, and/or dentist.

Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited Nursing program required. Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. If job is in a free-standing emergency department (FSED) location, one (1) year of emergency or ICU nursing experience is required. Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment. Depending on the unit/department, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required.
