Job summary

UC San Diego Health is seeking a Cardiac Cath Lab Registered Nurse to provide autonomous nursing care in a fast-paced environment. The RN will assess, care for, and monitor patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional cardiac and vascular procedures, serving as primary RN, circulator, or monitor as needed.

The role requires a California RN license, BLS/CPR, ACLS, and Moderate Sedation certification, with 2 years Cath Lab experience or ICU equivalent.

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
• RN License issued by the State of California.
• BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six months.
• Moderate Sedation certification within three months of hire.
• Two years Cath Lab experience or ICU experience as fallback.

• Willingness to work rotating nights, weekends, holidays and urgent procedures.

Responsibilities

Under general supervision, the Cath Lab Registered Nurse assesses patients, delivers care, and identifies, implements, and evaluates nursing interventions for a wide variety of patient populations undergoing diagnostic and interventional cardiac, pulmonary vascular, and peripheral vascular procedures. The RN may serve as primary RN, circulator, or monitor for these procedures. The department maintains a strong AMI program, and the RN directs and serves as a resource to other members of the healthcare team as assigned.

Autonomous nursing care is the ability of a nurse to assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
• RN License issued by the State of California.
• BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.
• Moderate Sedation certification within three (3) months of hire.
• Two years Cath Lab experience. If insufficient applicant pool, the department may consider candidates who have two (2+) or more years of ICU experience.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Ability to take call and work variable locations and shifts, including overtime, weekends, and holidays, per department needs.
• Ability to wear a lead apron (up to approximately 15 lbs).
• Ability to work in an environment with radiation exposure.
• Ability to respond within 30 minutes of STEMI activation.
• Excellent skills to communicate and influence effectively with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and external constituents, both verbally and in writing.
• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage multiple levels of information and responsibility, and to quickly assess moderately complex problems and develop potential solutions.
• Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment while consistently demonstrating empathy, professionalism, and kindness toward staff and patients.
• Adherence to UCSD Health Medical Center (C.A.R.I.N.G.) Standards of Performance, demonstrating professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior, and attentiveness to others.

• RCIS, CEN or CCRN certification.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Must be able to work 12-hour week shifts and participate in mandatory rotating call coverage, including nights, weekends, holidays, and urgent/emergent procedures. The position requires availability beyond standard day-shift hours and may include overtime based on department needs.
• Must be able to work at variable locations and shifts as required by department operations.
• Must be able to wear a lead apron weighing up to approximately 15 lbs. and work safely in an environment with radiation exposure.
• Selected candidate may be hired at the CN III level, pending review and approval by the Nurse Executive Council.
• Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $138,330 - $193,892 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $66.25 - $92.86
