The Abdominal Transplant (ABTX) Unit is a 27‑bed mixed acuity (acute and step‑down care) unit specializing in comprehensive care to kidney, liver, pancreas, and uterus transplant patients and living donors. Nurses on this unit practice at the top of their scope, providing the highest quality care and overall patient experience. The unit handles more than 400 procedures annually, including heart, lung, kidney, pancreas, liver, uterus, and multi‑organ transplants. As Alabama’s only liver transplant program, the ABTX is part of the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute, one of the nation’s most active organ transplant centers. UAB Medicine is also a leading renal transplant center for both living‑donor and deceased‑donor procedures.
