Job summary

Tucson Medical Center is seeking a Rapid Response Nurse to provide critical care and rapid assessment across units.

In this role you will support bedside teams, escalate care appropriately, mentor staff, and help maintain safety and quality across the hospital's critical care services.

Qualifications

• Graduation from a qualified, nationally-accredited nursing program.

Unit Information:

The Rapid Response Nurse serves as a critical resource throughout the hospital, providing expert assessment and intervention for patients showing signs of clinical deterioration. In this 36-hour, 12-hour night shift role, the nurse collaborates with bedside teams to identify and manage high-risk patients, facilitate timely escalation of care, and support optimal patient outcomes. Beyond direct patient care, the Rapid Response Nurse acts as a mentor and educator for bedside staff, helping to build clinical confidence, strengthen critical thinking skills, and promote a culture of safety and excellence across the organization.

SUMMARY:

Provides oversight and training, while participating in the rapid response, stroke and code team responses for critical patient care. Maintains NRCPR Database and runs abstracts to evaluate performance for quality control and recommends improvements as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Provides critical patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure safe patient care.

Ensures accurate data collection, coordinates documentation efforts of staff and physicians, and educates the teams on the importance of that documentation.

Maintains NRCPR database ensuring accuracy and consistency, prepares reports for management review.

Keeps current on technology, regulatory, and operational trends in the health care industry as it relates to critical patient care.

Receives and reviews preceding critical care shift reports and floor nurse reports; makes complete rounds of all units, and notes patients' condition.

Provides direction, instruction and guidance for all staff involved in the critical care of patients.

Notifies appropriate physician regarding any unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation.

Develops relationships that facilitate bringing forward issues around utilization and cost avoidance opportunities.

Evaluates outcomes of critical patient care, consults with other specialists as needed and adjusts nursing care processes as necessary to ensure optimal patient care.

Runs abstracts and prepares reports that delineate critical care responses and analyzes for optimal performance; providing recommendations for improvement.

P rovides appropriate, direct patient care utilizing appropriate aseptic techniques.

Develops education materials and programs to instruct assigned staff in the proper response to a variety of critical care issues such as coding, and stroke that require rapid response.

Works with rapid response teams and managers to provide quality reviews of critical care cases evaluating for the determination of best practice.

Adheres to TMCH organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies and standards.

Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

Graduation from a qualified, nationally-accredited nursing program.

EXPERIENCE:

Two (2) years of recent critical care and / or emergency department nursing experience in an acute care setting.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION:

Current RN licensure permitting work in the State of Arizona. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications. Additional certification may be required for some units.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of critical care techniques, tools and responses required to ensure optimal patient care.
• Knowledge of processes and procedures to follow during a rapid response, code, or stroke call.
• Skill in evaluating performance and recommending improvements.
• Skill in developing training materials and educating staff in the proper responses for critical care issues.
• Skill in the use and maintenance of computer systems and programs, especially NRCPR, PC File and Folder, Word, EXCEL, e-mail and attachment capabilities, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
• Skill in communicating with staff involved in critical care, and physicians to ensure the proper care of patients.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to listen and accurately interpret others’ communication or instructions to take appropriate action.
• Ability to speak and communicate effectively.
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to interpret an extensive variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
