Job summary

Bay Area Hospital is seeking a Registered Nurse - Perianesthesia to provide comprehensive care across Pre-Op, PACU Phase 1 and II. You will apply nursing processes, teach patients and families, document care, and coordinate with the interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective recovery.

Candidates should be licensed RNs, with BLS/ACLS/PALS ideally, and have flexibility for varied shifts. A strong focus on patient safety and collaboration is essential.

Qualifications

  • Current RN license to practice in the US.
  • Perianesthesia/OR experience preferred.
  • Ability to work varied shifts including nights and weekends.

Job Description:

Registered Nurse - Perianesthesia

Functions as a team member in all phases of perianesthesia care including Pre-Op, PACU Phase 1, and PACU Phase II. Within the RN scope of practice as defined by the Oregon State Board of Nursing, applies the nursing process to the care of patients. Teaches patients and significant others. Documents patient care in the medical record. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to effectively coordinate overall care of the patient in the Perianesthesia departments.

POSITION SUMMARY

Functions as a team member in all phases of perianesthesia care including Pre-Op, PACU Phase 1, and PACU Phase II. Within the RN scope of practice as defined by the Oregon State Board of Nursing, applies the nursing process to the care of patients. Teaches patients and significant others. Documents patient care in the medical record. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to effectively coordinate overall care of the patient in the Perianesthesia departments.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists physician with endoscopic examinations; performs gastric manometer testing
  • Coordinates the interdisciplinary team to ensure patient readiness for surgery
  • Comprehensively reviews and assesses patient’s status r/t planned surgery, including:
    • Physical parameters
    • Lab values
    • Medications
    • Pre-, intra-, and post-op learning needs
    • Understanding of procedure
  • Consults with Surgeon, Anesthesia, and other providers as needed, to resolve identified patient issues in a timely manner
  • Prevents avoidable surgery cancellations
  • Begins interdisciplinary discharge planning process, including patient and caregivers in planning
  • Performs EKGs as ordered
  • Manages care of patient, including pain control, during anesthesia recovery
  • Manages patients undergoing moderate sedation, including medication administration, monitoring, routine and emergency airway management
  • Identifies and interprets cardiac rhythms; proficient in use of cardio-respiratory monitoring equipment
  • Assesses patients, as appropriate to the scope of care the nurse will provide. Assessments may include physical, psychosocial, learning needs and barriers, needs related to age/culture, discharge planning
  • Establishes nursing diagnoses based on results of assessments and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team
  • Plans care according to identified diagnoses and needs. Updates plan of care as appropriate
  • Implements/performs individualized care, based on nursing care plan and the nurse’s role with the patient. This care may include but not be limited to:
    • Assists with activities of daily living, including fall risk management and safe patient handling
    • Medication administration
    • Skin assessment/wound care
    • Pain management
    • Operation/manipulation of biomedical and other patient care and testing equipment, including but not limited to infusion pumps, patient transfer equipment, cardiopulmonary monitors, invasive catheters and drains, thermoregulation devices, measurement devices, medication dispensing cabinets, external therapeutic devices
    • Assists the physician and other licensed, independent practitioners with invasive and non-invasive procedures
    • Teaches patients and their families about current illness, medical tests, medication, general healthcare, illness and disease prevention, and wellness promotion
    • Provides appropriate assignment, supervision, and direction to unlicensed assistive personnel in order to ensure optimum patient care
    • Provides interdisciplinary coordination and facilitation of overall care
    • Documents patient assessments, interventions, care, and teaching in the electronic medical record
    • Documents in paper format, as necessary. Documentation is complete, concise, timely, and legible
    • Evaluates care provided, communicates patient status and results of care to the interdisciplinary team
    • Other duties as assigned
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Must be able to take call nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis; must be within 30 minutes travel time to hospital
  • Excellent airway management skills
  • Able to read, write legibly, and converse effectively in the English language
  • Exhibits critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Flexible, able to prioritize and adapt to rapidly-changing patient and unit needs
  • Demonstrates effective teaching skills
  • Responds effectively to patient crisis/emergency situations
  • Proficient in use of computer, including accessing internet, word processing, and documenting in an electronic medical record system
  • Maintains regular, consistent and punctual attendance at the assigned job location
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/DEGREES
  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Oregon
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) required
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or must be obtained by the last day of the month after the 6-month grace period
  • American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course card or must be obtained by the last day of the month after the 1 year grace period
  • Specialty certification (CPAN or equivalent) preferred
EXPERIENCE
  • Recent (within past 5 years) acute care hospital experience preferred
