Job Summary

The Registered Nurse Operating Room HSS independently plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care in patient care situations using standards of care and policy and procedure. Provides direct nursing care to patients. Assumes teaching and leadership responsibilities. Participates in unit committee and quality improvement activities. Needs minimal supervision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Locate and document medical and nursing patient care information in the electronic or paper medical record.
  • Utilize appropriate interview techniques to obtain history within the time frame of unit policy and provide appropriate intervention.
  • Identify standards of care common to patient population, i.e., age specific barriers to learning.
  • Deliver patient care and treatment using problem‑solving skills and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of medication dosages for patient population served. Administer medication safely and accurately, and utilize available resources when questions arise.
  • Evaluate outcomes of care to determine if patient needs were met.
  • Complete chart forms fully; no blanks left and forms are legible.
  • Provide feedback regarding problems and complaints, and offer constructive suggestions. Use chain‑of‑command for problem‑solving and conflict resolution.
  • Complete care assignments in a reasonable amount of time.
  • Report to oncoming shift the care that should be provided and/or needs that have yet to be addressed.
  • Follow hospital standards related to Kronos system.
  • Accept responsibility for own learning needs. Attend courses and in‑services offered. Maintain clinical skills specifically required on unit. Maintain knowledge of current policies.
  • Attentive to assignment activities and anticipate the needs of the surgeon and team members.
  • Serve as a preceptor for new employees, coworkers and students and evaluate their performance by validating clinical and technical skills and interpersonal interactions.
  • Maintain communication with patient family/significant other as patient progresses through continuum of care.
Education, Experience and Qualifications
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the State of Florida.
  • One year of recent OR experience is required; orthopedic experience preferred.
  • Certification in specialty strongly preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Strong patient‑centered approach with a demonstrated ability to provide exemplary, world‑class customer service.
  • Intermediate computer knowledge: use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
