Position Summary

The Registered Nurse administers patient care in the Surgery Unit at Winnie Palmer Hospital where patients have an advanced illness or injury that requires timely, intense, and complex care to stabilize and support the patient’s medical condition. This unit requires a lower caregiver‑to‑patient ratio and highly trained team members with advanced skills.

Location: Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, Orlando, FL

Department: Women Surgery Unit

Type: Full-time (40 hours) 5 days, 8- hour shift

Shift: Days

Surgery Department

The WPH Peri‑Operative Department includes the Operating Room Suite, the Pre‑Anesthesia Care Area, and Post Anesthesia Care Unit. The department, together with Anesthesia Services, offers peri‑operative care to in‑ and outpatient females who meet the anesthesia ASA Class I, II, III, or IV physical status criteria of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

Core Services
  • Elective surgical procedures and GYN oncology procedures for women.
  • Patients having local, general, monitored anesthesia care, or regional anesthesia are treated.
  • The surgical service staffs schedule flexible nursing care and services for elective, urgent, and emergency cases around the clock.
  • WPH Surgery Department provides coverage for urgent and emergent cases 24/7.

Responsibilities
  • Assesses patient’s needs and develops or revises individualized plans of care, evaluating progress toward expected outcomes.
  • Functions as a patient and family advocate.
  • Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, interpreting and recording electronic displays such as intracranial pressures, central venous pressures, pulmonary artery pressures, and cardiac rhythms from cardiac monitors, respirators, ventilators, oxygen pumps, etc.
  • Responds to life‑saving situations based on nursing standards and protocol.
  • Observes, monitors, and assesses patients’ condition, recognizing serious situations and calling the physician or taking pre‑planned emergency measures when a physician is not immediately available.
  • Demonstrates critical knowledge, skills, and judgment to care for patients requiring complex assessment and therapies, high intensity interventions, and high‑level continuous nursing vigilance.
  • Utilizes information and assessment data to anticipate and respond with confidence and adapt to rapidly changing patient conditions.
  • Identifies and prioritizes information to take immediate, decisive, evidence‑based, patient‑focused action.
Qualifications
Education / Training
  • Graduate of an approved school of nursing.
  • Meets all mandatory, developmental, and performance competency requirements for Orlando Health and the unit/department.
Licensure / Certification
  • Maintains current licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Florida or Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).
  • Maintains current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification.
  • ACLS, NRP, PALS, TNCC required for certain areas.
Experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year of Operating Room Circulating Nurse experience required.
